Production of primary aluminium billets (120,000MT/yr) and slabs (65,000MT/yr) of various alloys (6XXX billets, 1XXX/3XXX/4XXX/5XXX/8XXX slabs) and dimensions.

Position : R&D and Customer Support Casthouse Engineer

(Indirectly managing a workforce of 96 people in the casthouse)

Responsible for R&D regarding the new products design and implementation as well as the elaboration of the existing product range :

Assessment of market and customer needs in collaboration with Commercial and Sales Department.

Design and implementation of optimal product mix according to production constraints and sales schedule.

Development of alternative alloys and product forms (dimensions).

Communication of evolving requirements and changes to the casthouse personnel.

Customer support in problem solving and provision of solutions on new applications and special requirements :

Design and dimensional calculation of new casting molds for slabs.

Casting parameters elaboration and improvement.

Casting quality evaluation through metallographic inspection and laboratory analysis.

Quality improvement and problem solving in cooperation with partners such as Hydro, Wagstaff and Greek Universities R&D laboratories.

Development and implementation of process and equipment improvement projects in the casthouse :

Realization of Green Belt and 5S “Continuous Progress” projects.

Organization of frequent casthouse audit sessions by both internal and independent auditors.

Implementation of Casthouse Health and Saftey policy :

Follow up of advanced health and safety practices implemented in the casthouse (current record : 10 years without LTI).

Performance of weekly safety audits.

Coaching of shift workgroups in development and implementation of safety improvement projects.

Participation in Root Cause Analysis sessions in case of any incident.

February 1998 – October 2014

Alufond S.A. (Alumil Group) - Aluminium Processing Industry, Kilkis, Greece

Production of secondary 6XXX aluminium alloy billets (raw material for the group’s extrusion plants) by remelting and casting both recyclable aluminium scrap and primary aluminium ingots.

Position : Casthouse Manager

(Directly managing a workforce of 25 people in the casthouse)

Responsible for production supervision, quality control, maintenance and upgrading of casthouse equipment, raw materials inventory control, casthouse staff training and development.

Milestones :

1999 : Start-up of the remelting secondary billets casthouse (capacity 15,000tn/yr).

2001 : Implementation of a capacity expansion project in the casthouse (35,000tn/yr).

2007-2008 : Design, equipment selection and installation of a totally new casthouse (capacity 65,000tn/yr), with state of the art equipment (100MT double chamber melting furnace, Wagstaff casting machine, SNIF degasser).

2008 : Casting Specialist Certificate. Training session at Wagstaff headquarters (Spokane, USA).

Application of management practices :

Implementation of Total Quality Management.

Setup, implementation and follow-up of KPI’s.

Continuous training of casthouse supervisors and operators.

Implementation of a strict maintenance schedule for minimization of idle time.

Casthouse continuous improvement process :

Establishment of permanent work groups for the development and realization of improvement projects.

Realization of Green Belt and 5S projects.

R&D for the improvement of billet quality in cooperation with partners such as Wagstaff and Pyrotek.

Health and Safety / Quality Management :

Implementation of health and safety measures, according to the Greek and EU laws and specifications (best achievement : 3 years (2009-2012) without lost time injury in the new casthouse).

Development and implementation of quality management systems ISO9001/14001.

Achievements :

Achievement of continuous operation of the casthouse (24h/day -7days/week) with the minimum personnel (4 shifts of 5 workers) for production level of 45,000MT/yr.

Achievement of billet production scrap rate <2%.

Optimization of consumables management with respect to cost and quality parameters.

Experience as Junior Engineer in the textile industry business (quality control, laboratory instruments sales, customer support).
