Work Experience
Current: Manufacturing Engineer
Industrial Repair Team
Approximate Dates: 3/2013 – Present
Duties: Create new manufacturing processes and support the employees involved. Create software programs, install new machinery, setup turnkey cnc production processes and train employees to operate automation safely.
Custom Macro B CNC Programming: The task was to write a cnc program that could make decisions and rewrite its own programming code. This is the task of creating a new generation of smart cnc programs. The cnc program identifies the part by probe inputs, decides the best method to cut the part and writes the finished program. This goal was accomplished by combining machining experience with programming experience and a strong foundation of mathematics to create a smart program. The result of this project eliminated hours of hand measuring and human error which reduced labor and scrap.
CNC Department Manager
JE Adams Industries, Cedar Rapids, IA 52403
Approximate dates: 11/2007 – 10/2012
Duties: Machine shop supervisor, program cnc machine tools, repair cnc machine tools, promote continuous improvement and reduce scrap parts.
Machine Refurbishment: In this example, a production machine was identified as necessary to future requirements, but needed refurbishment because of the 50% scrap rate. Comparing the options to refurbish this machine an outside company provided a bid of $50,000 to refurbish and six months to complete. My solution was to refurbish myself purchasing standardized automation hardware and manufacturing the new components in house. The project was completed in two months. The cost was $1500. The new scrap rate was 0.001%. The revenue produced was $0.05 per second.
Continuous Process Improvement: The task was to evaluate current production processes and create an environment of continuous process improvement. Time studies were created to define the current manufacturing process and identify which tasks performed by employees were value added and which tasks were not. The conclusion was that forty percent of current department operations were machine setup tasks that did not add value to the product. The solution was to group production parts into families of parts that utilize similar tooling. Then each machine would hold tools that could manufacture all of the parts in the group. This reduced the task of setups to changing collet jaws and material. Average setup time was reduced from four hours down to thirty minutes.
Six Sigma and Reducing Production Errors: The task was to create a process that would reduce scrap and increase the percentage of good parts. The current method of quality control was evaluated and deficiencies were identified. The solution was that a six sigma type program was created that defined the steps in the manufacturing process, identified the processes to measure and create a document system to track responsibility. This program reduced individual part errors and identified production dimensional drifts before these dimensional errors could expand.
Equipment Maintenance: The task was to perform repairs in house with a current staff that did not have experience. The solution was to personally attend each machine repair and utilize each repair as a teachable moment by creating a team problem solving environment that passed on the process of problem identification, solution creation, and repair execution. This method of solution management created employees that could solve problems and work autonomously as individuals or in groups.
