Thesis Title: Automobility, Hospitality, African American Tourism, and Mapping Victor H. Green’s Negro Motorist Green Book

Abstract: Victor Green’s travel guide stands as one illustration of tools used by African Americans to survive in the contested and disputed landscape of Jim Crow segregation. The Green Book as a symbol of the civil rights movement further represents the discourses and politics of automobility that both limit and empower resistance. The Green Book is an under-utilized source available to geographers for researching the numerous barriers to tourism, racial discrimination is one that is especially under analyzed. The Green Book also helps to close the qualitative- quantitative chasm by offering the opportunity to human geography to engage both geo-analytic and socio-critical approaches.

Dissertation Title: High school graduates: How work ready are they Abstract: As United States congressional legislation makes more funds available to school systems that implement educational curriculum designed to increase graduate workforce readiness, debate on curriculum effectiveness and success abounds. A historical review of congressional legislation funding and levels of workforce readiness of high school graduates do not parallel each other. Statistical analyses of the resulting data indicate, despite increased funding, high school seniors appear to be graduating with inconsistent levels of workforce readiness skills. Results also indicate learners accurately estimate their own workforce readiness level. Finally, the research demonstrates when a learner shares an equal preference for two or more learning styles, job skill readiness increases. Committee Chair: Dr. Scot Beazley (********@*******.***) Master of Arts in Education, History concentration - 1996 East Carolina University, Greenville, NC

Thesis Title: Diplomatic and cultural relations between England and Germany 1898-1910 Abstract: Because of the family ties between England’s royal family and Germany’s Kaiser an Anglo-German alliance appears natural. However, persistent diplomatic attempts at forming an alliance continually failed. The fact that neither side willingly offered terms desired nor considered essential by the other country and the fact British public opinion distrusted the German intentions, leads to the conclusion that distrust was always present and truthful negotiations for an alliance never developed.
