PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

Passionate about learning. If my professional life tells a story then it is the story of me accumulating every bit of knowledge and skill that I can. From peppering more knowledgeable people with questions to spending my spare time reading documents and paying for training from my own pocket I have been relentless in my pursuit of knowledge based skills.

Highly resistant to stress. I have thrived in an industry allows no room for errors and requires an even composure under even the most difficult of circumstances.

I am the guy who can figure things out. Whether you need someone to come up with a “good enough” solution on the spot or a new system to prevent problems from repeating I am that guy! I believe passionately that every problem has a solution and that more often than not there is an opportunity to be found as well.

AREAS OF KNOWLEDGE

Network Architecture, XML, Computer Hardware Maintenance and Repair, C#/.NET, SQL Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Operating Systems, AppleScript, Linux, Git/GitHub, HTML5/CSS/JavaScript/JQuery, Printer Troubleshooting, Graphic Design Software, Microsoft Office, Imposition, Direct Mail/Mail Merge Software, Electronic Forms Design, Training, Project Management, Visual Basic / Visual Basic for Applications, BASH / Expect scripts

EMPLOYMENT

THE LOWE MARTING GROUP

Prepress Coordinator / Automation Specialist - June 2016 - Present

At the Lowe Martin Group I prioritize and coordinate all work that comes through the prepress department. I have found many opportunities to introduce automation both directly and indirectly related to my role as Prepress Coordinator. This has included:

writing a combination AppleScript and Expect Script program for quickly finding archived jobs. Previously it was necessary for an operator to manually check three different live locations before telnetting into three different archive servers. (https://github.com/McFunston/Archive-Retrieval-Expect-Script)

writing Visual Basic for Applications code to retrieve scheduling information from five different Excel files which had different and often conflicting fields and storing the information in one concise and easy to ready schedule. I am currently working on a project to do this through C#/.Net so that colleagues will be able to do this without my oversight (https://github.com/McFunston/ExcelScheduleTools)

writing numerous JavaScript code blocks to automate and perform error checking within Adobe Acrobat. This includes an AppleScript program for extracting pages, code to check trim box consistency, add tag lines and code for checking and automating forms (https://github.com/McFunston/PDFJavascriptFunctions)

ALLEGRA DESIGN PRINT MAIL

Network Administrator / Senior Graphic Designer / Direct Mail Specialist - January 2000 - June 2016

When I began at Allegra in January 2000 it was still a very analog company. It had a barely functioning network, no fileserver, and no system in place for protecting clients’ digital assets. During my time here I have:

transformed a barely functional network that was using 10Base-T, NetBios, and a single collision domain to a modern 1000Base-T switch based network using TCP/IP that is properly tracked and documented. In doing so I have increased productivity and profitability immeasurably

designed and implemented a proper storage strategy for the hundreds of thousands of clients’ files that were under my care. This included building and upgrading secure fileservers, created a system for tracking files, and training employees in its proper use

devised a file backup and archive plan such that Allegra went from having serious problems with file loss to not a single loss in over 15 years

learned to the point where I could train others in the use of all major typesetting and graphic design software, which allowed us to accept design jobs from such organizations as Rogers, CAA, Shepherds of Good Hope, and several Government of Canada departments and ministries

writing code using Visual Basic for Applications for repairing and enhancing mailing lists

proactively sought out concepts which are often misunderstood by clients and colleagues and provided the necessary training
