Objective

To find an engineering design or leadership position that utilizes my strong development experience in digital and analog design at the system, integrated circuit, and board level.

Education

MSEE National Technological University, Fort Collins, CO 1994

Specialized in analog/digital integrated circuit design and communications systems.

BSEE Marquette University, Milwaukee WI 1986

Experience

Intel Corporation

7/13- Present: RF embedded Systems Manager for RF integrated circuits. As the embedded systems manager, myself and my team are responsible for the complex command and control system that is required of modern day transceivers and overall cellular platforms. I lead the team from initial specifications through platform integration, delivering the firmware, digital designs, pre-silicon verification, and lab testing to assure internal, customer, and regulatory requirements are met. I also lead a 90-person team across multiple time zones and cultures.

Fujitsu Microelectronics America

4/09-7/13: Director of Embedded systems. Duties included leading the Digital Design, Firmware, and Verification teams in the development of complex transceiver circuits for the cellular markets.

Freescale group was sold to Fujitsu to work exclusively on Cellular transceiver products. Shipped first sawless 3g/2g transceiver in cellular industry and first LTE product in Japan and US. LTE product currently is still in production. I led all the digital design, top level verification and firmware development. I was the verification lead driving verification plan and it’s implementation and wrote tests in Verilog. All tapeouts were of high quality and samples could make calls on the first pass silicon.

Freescale Semiconductor/ Motorola Semiconductor Products Sector

7/03 – 4/09 Global Manager of System Design, Verification, and Digital Design teams in Radio Products Division

Manager of multi site group chartered for the System design and verification of RF/IF transceiver integrated circuits and the digital content. Designs range from 3G RX/TX, complete EDGE transceiver, and power management integrated circuits.

Created methodology that modeled analog devices using Verilog to allow for complete system verification without using spice simulations.

Led the verification efforts including authoring the test plan, tracking and validating the simulation results, and completing numerous verification tests.

Motorola Personal Communications Sector

6/01-7/03 Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff and Baseband Functional Manager

Chip lead of complex cellular baseband leading 30 person team responsible for 50 million transistor System on a chip device for multiple wireless communication platforms. Directed activities of two international design sites to bring project to completion. Total project staff over 100. Project set new standards for functionality and cost for the division along with being a key technology enabler for main customer.

5/00-6/01 Member of the Technical Staff and Baseband Functional Manager.

Leadership of development of SOC class devices. Additional responsibilities were the coordination of projects across design centers, development of standard design methodologies, and technology roadmap activities. Design staff was increased from 12 to 26 during this time.

5/98-5/00 Principal Staff Engineer and Engineering Manager, Baseband IC Development Group

Responsible for leading the development of custom integrated circuits for high volume digital cellular telephones. Designs were SOC level and included embedded processor and DSP as well as custom ASIC. Additionally, responsible for developing roadmaps for future products. Also developed the model of how verification would be done for SOC devices of significant size.

5/95-5/98 Senior Staff Engineer.

Lead the development for a system on chip digital design. Included microcontroller, custom DSP hardware, and ASIC. Employed, SPW, Verilog RTL, Synopsys, and advanced place and route techniques to implement designs. Was responsible for project from concept through implementation including system radio design spanning three IC’s. I performed the top level system design, partitioning of blocks and subsystems, and significant RTL and verification tasks.

5/93-5/95 Lead Engineer, IC development group

I lead the development of custom integrated circuits for analog cellular telephones. I was involved in the projects from concept, through design/layout, implementation in radio, test development, and production launch. Responsibilities and projects included: Lead designer for full custom analog power supply and control IC and team member on a similar IC. Designs included boost DC-DC convertors, audio, and control functions. I finished the layout of the device in addition to design work. I developed test software in C and assembly language to test and characterize the parts. Factory test plans and bench evaluations were also completed.

3/90-5/93 Senior Engineer, European Cellular subscriber group.

Responsible for entire audio, acoustics, logic, display, and power supply subsystems for cellular telephone handsets. Developed circuitry for designs for iconic phones as the Motorola micro tac.

Motorola Automotive and Industrial Electronics Group, Northbrook Illinois

3/88-3/90 Development Engineer, European Powertrain Controls

Design and development of automobile ignition modules for underhood applications. Duties included circuit design, board layout, environmental evaluation, and factory test.

6/86-3/88 Development Engineer, Electronic Appliance Control Group

Design and develop controllers for high volume home appliance market. Within two months of hire, I was a project lead taking the product from design through layout and factory support.

Johnson Controls, Milwaukee Wisconsin

8/83-12/85 Co-op engineering student. Developed flows for the CAD team to be able to input schematics digitally and transfer that data to the layout team for the layout implementation.
