Professional Experience

Cummins Power Generation Technology Development and Research Fridley, MN June 2011 – Dec 2015

Mechanical Engineering Technical Advisor

Developing technical solutions for New – Unique – Difficult (NUDs),devekiping technology items for new products. Providing Team leadership while conducting new product requirement generation and system engineering, design, analysis, integration and testing of power generation systems.

Developed, integrated, and tested environmental control system to fix emissions issue on high horsepower product line.

Designed and integrated and provided testing support for a pre-packaged enclosed 330 KW Combined Heat and Power (CHP) natural gas generator technical demonstrator in advance of full scale engineering development program.

Developed heat rejection prediction tool (for charge air cooler, water jacket, and ambient) for future Tier IV emission engines for power nodes that have not been developed at that time of the study (100- 500KWs). Based on current and future system cooling needs and performance data for potential radiators, fans and motors, I developed cooling system sizing / component selection and optimization modeling tool for company’s new power generation product line.

US Fish and Wildlife Service Construction & Acquisition Division Bloomington, MN April 2011 – June 2011

Mechanical Engineer (Contract)

Construction plans designed, reviewed and bid package development for various site renovations and energy conservation upgrades.

.

Goodrich, Sensors & Integrated Systems, Advanced Sensors Technology Center Burnsville, MN Sept 2010 – Feb 2011

Mechanical Engineer (Contract)

Investigated and developed aircraft systems measurement requirements for predictive service and determining in-flight conditions. Evaluated applicable technologies and designed prototype sensor assemblies and related fixtures required for fabrication and testing.

BAE Systems, (Formally United Defense) Minneapolis, MN June 1999 – June 2010

Sr. Staff Mechanical Engineer

Responsible for analysis, development of specifications, mechanical designs, failure analysis and resolution for a wide range of harsh environment electro-mechanical systems relating to smart guided projectiles, long range conventional and electro-magnetic guns. High “G”, Shock, Temperature, Electro-magnetic fields. Conducted interdisciplinary concept development, systems engineering, simulation, detail design, and evaluation/ test for new and existing product pursuits and business areas. Provided technical evaluation for potential technologies and insight into realism of new business ideas.

Efforts on projects in my last one and a half years at the BAE Systems resulted in three nominations for the company's national recognition awards.

Invented, implemented, and demonstrated an innovative, low-cost impact test fixture, resulting in saving in excess of $500,000 and a reduction of testing turnaround time by several months. Fixture was used to assess the validity of a rocket motor initiator discard failure modes and subsequent design improvements, resulting in successful rocket function in gun tests.

Developed innovative cartage case insulation system resulting in unprecedented safety advances for cased propelling charges by preventing propellant cook-off.

Developed conceptual integrated railgun system design that demonstrated the viability of Electro-Magnetic gun systems on navy ships, which retained the program and earned new development contracts.

Designed and oversaw the successful fabrication of the first composite, cantilevered, gun mount for the Navy's 32 Mega-Joule Electro-Magnetic prototype launcher. This device will allow testing to be increased record setting energies.

Conceived, developed and marketed, “Low Cost, Lightweight, Precision Munition System” by integrating inter-divisional company technologies and a new covert launcher system to form a completely new company concept product.

Primary contributor to the development and demonstration of an electro-mechanical projectile fuze which provides guidance for a ballistic round when installed in fuze well. This patented device positioned the company to compete for a multi-million dollar business opportunity.

Won Special Bonus Award for the design, fabrication, test, and delivery of a software-controlled pin puller latch in an unprecedented 35 days. Latch was an interim solution to a test failure that prevented guided flight-testing, a program significant milestone. Successful latch function was critical for projectile’s success and led to the longest guided test flight in history.

Professional Technologies, Ham Lake, MN Sept 1995 – June 1999

Principal Development Engineer

Performed detailed product design and tooling development for injection molded parts and assemblies for diverse client base. Responsible for rapid prototyping, evaluating and integrating new tooling technologies with established manufacturing processes, and training personnel on its use and application.

Set up and operated design and rapid prototyping center that facilitated growth of the company’s injection molding production sales.

Goodrich, Inc. (Formally Rosemount), Eagan, MN August 1995 – Sept 1995

Design Engineer (Contract)

Responsible for the development of several Mechanical packaging designs for a new Goodrich business pursuit in the area of pressure transducers for gas turbine engines. Effort resulted in first sale of a pressure sensor package for aircraft engines and was the beginning of the aircraft pressure sensor systems product line.

Caterpillar Paving Products, Brooklyn Park, MN May 1995 – July 1995

Design Engineer (Contract)

Responsibilities included mechanical subsystem design and vendor interface in development of new components for vehicle conveyor system.

Alliant Techsystems / Honeywell, Edina, MN Nov 1987 – May 1995

Senior Mechanical Engineer

Justified and implemented the capital expenditures for new rapid prototyping tools, reducing design evaluation cycle times and cost.

Developed and successfully executed test plan for a low cost mine countermeasure system that reduced the risk to our military mobile forces.

Designed innovative, cost saving inertial sensor assembly packaging concept used in the air data reference unit for fly-by-wire controls on Boeing’s 777 jets.

Conducted design/drawing review and generated necessary engineering change orders (ECO) on Mk 644 test station and related equipment for accuracy, completeness, producibility, maintainability, and conformity to systems and other controlling documents. This effort led to the customer's acceptance of the technical drawing package.

Designed and integrated two unmanned tele-operational land vehicle prototypes. Prepared trade studies on vehicle drive systems and subsystems. Responsibilities included designing and integrating related control center and crew station for remote control vehicle, using servomotors, linear actuators, and hydraulic systems control by VME based processors.
