Project and Lab Experience
Senior Design Project --CHBE 431 Process Design
Worked with a team of four members to design a theoretical isoprene factory. Design components included the process to make isoprene, all mechanical components and vessels, and a cost analysis of a 10 year projection for the factory. The project required obtaining the SACHE certification for all potential safety components of the factory.
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) --CHBE 315 instrumental Design
Determined concentration of caffeine in a sample sports drink by analyzing retention times of various dilutions by using HPLC.
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) --CHBE 315 instrumental Design
Determined the rate order for a ligand substitution reaction using Beer’s law and charting the absorbance’s to time.
Mass Spectrometry --CHBE 315 Instrumental Design
Determined the composition a compound from 8 potential compounds using electrospray ionization (ESI).
Distillation Towers --CHBE 430 Unit Operations
Worked with both bath and continuous distillation towers in a controlled laboratory setting to determine the best conditions for the separation of ethanol from water. A refractometer was used in determining concentrations.
Bioreactor --CHBE 430 Unit Operations
Determined optimal conditions for producing ethanol in yeast cells in an anaerobic environment. Glucose, ethanol and cell concentrations were analyzed at consistent time intervals and required collecting samples at late hours.
Engineering Open House --University of Illinois Event
Worked with a team of four members on a project about molecular dissociation for a presentation to the public over the weekend.
