NICADD (Northern Illinois Center for Accelerator and Detector Development) Research Aide (May 2016 – December 2016)
• Aided in research projects: Mu2e and DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment)
• The purpose of the Mu2e project is to possibly discover new physics apart from the standard model, in which muons can decay into electrons without producing neutrinos. The purpose of the DUNE project is to study neutrinos in many different ways. It consists of sending neutrinos from underground at Fermilab, through the earth’s crust, to a mile-deep detector under South Dakota. Info: dunescience.org
• Produced data by flashing an LED at SiPMs (Silicon Photo-Multipliers) in a light-tight box. Also took “dark” data and I-V data for the SiPMs. The SiPMs were also irradiated to examine its effect. The SiPMs are to be used in both projects for the same purpose; the purpose of the SiPMs is to detect cosmic rays entering the sample.
