Professional Experience

Object Technology Solutions (OTSI), HP Fort Collins, CO -- 9/2015 to 10/2016

Quality Software Test Engineer – Test Hewlett Packard’s leading Remote Graphics Software. Perform detailed test scripts on pre-release software. Discover, evaluate and analyze underlying problems. Generate defect reporting using Rally. Upgrade and maintain HP Windows and Linux computer test systems.

Sun Microsystems / StorageTek, Louisville, CO -- 1/1990 to 7/2008

Senior Test Engineer – Advance Manufacturing Engineering

Recruited as a valued resource, charged with developing advanced methodologies and test processes specializing in new product introduction.

Contributions:

Test project leader: Developed and launched effective manufacturing test processes for all new tape library products including 9710-40, L40, L80, L700, SL500, SL3000, and SL8500 libraries. Wrote test plans that defined test methodology, test equipment, test scripts, critical parameters, data collection, statistical control processes and delivery schedule from prototype to first revenue shipments. Defined detailed test procedures, and supervised development of test cases and integration of test equipment into the manufacturing process. Provided leadership and direction to implement best test process methodologies.

Established parameters for tracking and reporting product performance. Drove creation of process tools that provided instant access to manufacturing data and automatically charted performance indicators: CPK, Pareto, SPC, and Yield. Made operating margins a quality metric, creating a monthly report using SAS and Excel to track parameter margins (CPK) and identify potential design improvements.

Implemented statistical methods to ensure that processes are stable and in control. Recognized as the driving force behind meaningful data collection and the use of SPC across entire testing platforms.

Conducted research to develop advanced theories and concepts for test. Developed a Figure of Merit algorithm that determined how well a product was performing relative to its target. Worked resolutely to provide methods that would extract meaningful data from both manufacturing and the field.

Continuously monitored the processes for improvement, developing and presenting ongoing opportunities for improving defect detection, increasing yields, optimizing test times, streamlining the process and making performance metrics more visible. Participated as a team member in a Lean Six Sigma environment.

Developed a Visual Basic application that provided build-to-configuration instructions and then tested and confirmed that the product was assembled correctly at each stage of assembly.

Developed a Lab VIEW and SQL application to extract production data from an Oracle database. The software allowed engineers to target data that was specific to their needs.

Analyzed root cause failures. Provided expertise in analyzing and resolving complex electrical, mechanical, software and test process issues.

Software Regression Testing. Developed test plans and performed regression tests to validate product features and software enhancements. Generated detailed failure reports in defect tracking system. Worked with software development engineers to resolve problems.

Technical Communication. Demonstrated expertise in authoring all forms of technical documentation, carefully crafting communications that address and explain test plans and procedures, define technical descriptions and strategically outline results. Ability to plan and create from engineering specifications, a comprehensive documentation package that clearly defines a process and expectations for each department involved in a project. Ability to translate abstract concepts into simple terms.

Test Equipment Development Engineer

Conceived, designed and developed advanced manufacturing test equipment that supported production of new disk drive technologies. Served as liaison between test engineering and manufacturing to define tester functionality, establish evaluation metrics and resolve testing issues. Directed teams in the creation of advanced functions, testing methodologies, and evaluation of test data.

Contributions:

Redesigned tester read channel electronics which dramatically improved the quality of the read/write head signal, eliminating system noise components while increasing signal strength.

Conceived and developed a control system using optical positioning that increased the speed of a linear slide and allowed for simple but accurate track positioning.

Developed an automated calibration system that revealed previously unknown tester bandwidths and channel relationships.

Solved a manufacturing problem. Provided an elegant solution that prevented expensive gold-standard disks from crashing during manufacturing calibration cycles.
