Work Experience
Bandwidth and Cloud Services Group, Nairobi, Kenya Project Manager Nov 2011 – Nov 2016
Planned, Managed and Supervised Construction Projects to grow the infrastructure of a wholesale bandwidth provider throughout Eastern African Countries; Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Sudan, and Ethiopia.
Maintained infrastructure and provided 24/7 support to the Network Operations Center by supervision and supported teams of technicians in key regional areas with troubleshooting, equipment, and supplies.
Drove down the cost of building Outside Plant (OSP) Infrastructure from the previous outsourced rate of $15,000 per km, to less than $4,000 per km through effective construction management techniques, budgeting, and planning.
Built over 1600 km of underground and overhead fiber optic infrastructure within 3 years and was made partner of the construction division of the company
Managed and supervised over 800 laborers, over 40 technicians and professionals, including sub-contractors for the roll-out of new Projects.
Built and installed remote site data centers, complete with 3 stage backup power, remote access to the Networks Operations Centre, and real-time monitoring of critical parameters like battery state of charge, key access login, ambient temperature, and solar system status among others.
Maintained over 1500 km of fiber infrastructure and supervised the necessary manpower and resources for robust 24/7 preventive and corrective action support using effective systems and procedures that were strictly adhered to.
Introduced, first ever in East Africa, mechanized trenching and plowing techniques of underground fiber installation; trained, operated, and managed the use of DitchWitch trenchers and Cable Plowing with a Bron HSII plow fitted on a Caterpillar D8R Dozer.
Berta Construction, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Plant and Equipment Department Manager Oct 2005 - Nov 2011
Ensured efficient and high operational up-times for equipment fleet by supervising mechanics, machine operators, drivers, and technicians, across multiple project sites.
Managed over 80 Heavy Duty earth-moving and Stationary equipment and maintained over 90% operational up-time using fleet management software and workshop best practices.
Performed purchasing, budgeting, as well as planning activities for new projects and tenders, by procuring parts and services for rebuilding major machine components and performing regular machine use evaluations.
Supervised repairs of earth-moving and stationary machinery including complete overhaul of engine systems, hydro-static and mechanical transmissions, hydraulic pumps/motors/implements/control valves, drive-trains, as well as jaw and cone crusher systems; machine makes include Caterpillar, Komatsu, Dynapac, Hyundai, John Deere, Deutz, and several others.
Investigated equipment failures to diagnose faulty operation and made appropriate maintenance repairs and reports.
Berta Marble Industry, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Design Engineer Jan 2009 – Nov 2011
Designed and built Marble/Granite Cutting and Polishing machines, as well as material handling cranes and track systems.
Developed designs and built prototypes which were optimized and eventually put to work in the production area.
Documented designs using 3D CAD modeling software, tracked optimizations and design changes, and reported directly to the Managing Director.
Worked with machinists, fabricators, welders, mining crews, and machine operators to deliver efficient machines and material handling set-ups.
Arcelormittal-I/N Tek, I/N Kote, New Carlisle, Indiana Mechanical Engineering Intern Jun 2004 – Aug 2004
Evaluated, redesigned, and documented the automatic grease distribution system at the Continuous Galvanizing Line plant, and successfully updated the company database.
Participated in an investigative committee analyzing the failure of a large furnace bearing that caused 4 days outage; contributed by presenting failure analysis calculations that showed the failed bearing had outlived its operational lifespan.
Met with suppliers of automatic grease distribution systems and components, and discussed details of the plant needs and the best combination of products needed.
Attended on-site training seminar by NSK Bearing Company, and got certification on Furnace and Cold-Roll Steel Bearing Maintenance and Operation.
Successfully completed OSHA Basic Safety Training and safely operated in the manufacturing facility, in and around elevated areas, heavy items, tools and parts, as well as furnace areas where oxygen sensors were always used.
