Research Consultant, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), India Aug 2014 - May 2015 Project Title: Microwave Assisted Synthesis of Superabsorbent Bio Polymeric Nano-Composite
• Developed super absorbent nanocomposites based on a biodegradable natural polymer with inorganic clay as filler for applications in dye removal.
• Studied the improved water-absorbing capability, water-absorbing rate, pH-resistance and re-swelling properties of these super absorbents.
• Synthesized grafted biopolymers, Chitosan and Carboxy Methyl Chitosan (CMC) composites that demonstrated a high water absorbency at a wide pH range from 4 to 11, which was advantageous for potential applications in agriculture.
• Characterized the grafted super absorbents using FTIR; examined their dispersion and morphology using AFM and XRD. Research Volunteer, McGill Composites Centre, USC, CA June 2016-Present Advisor: Dr. Steven Nutt
• Investigating the effects of chemical curing and aging of a Polyimide Composite used for high-temperature applications.
• Experience in hand layup and vacuum bag preparation for the synthesis of neat resin, glass fibre-reinforced composite panels.
• Hands-on experience in performing Surface Characterization, Testing and Analysis of thermal, mechanical, and rheological properties of the aged and un-aged polymer resins. Laboratory Assistant, Chemical and Material Science Engineering Laboratory, USC, CA Sept 2015 – Present
• Developing techniques for the experiments and running trials prior to the labs.
• Train the undergraduate students on device handling and to perform the experiments.
• Monitor and update lab inventory for all chemicals and supplies.
• Prepare proper disposal methods for chemical & bio waste, and deliver the safety instructions. RELEVANT PROJECTS
Project Title: Development of Fire Retardant Composites, DSCE, Team Size: 4 Feb 2014 – June 2014
• Synthesized a Fire Retardant Polypropylene (FRP) composite with varying percentages of carbon nano-tubes and cenospheres.
• Optimized the mechanical properties of the FRP composite by varying the amounts of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer, Glycidyl Methacrylate, and Pentaerythritol Phosphate alcohol.
• The polypropylene blend obtained showed ~50% drop in the Heat Release Rate and a 10s delay in the time of ignition.
• This project was awarded 2nd place by The Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE) Association.
