Technical Writing Experience
I have published over 150 technical papers in peer reviewed scientific journals, and written many grant proposals requesting funding from Federal agencies, as indicated in my resume below. Included are review articles, book chapters, and edited books. Samples of my writing can be found in the subset of my publications included at the end of this resume.
I have served on the editorial boards of several scientific journals (see my resume below). I worked several years for JAM Post, a manuscript editing service for authors from foreign countries. Recently, I have worked as a part time member of the faculty of the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, teaching short courses, providing guidance for graduate and undergraduate students on personal career development, editing (rewriting) their manuscripts for publication in English, and helping them prepare their manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

INDEPENDENT CONSULTANT / SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHER, World-Wide 2013 – Present
Adjunct Professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology; research and lectures on subjects including climate change and global warming, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in agriculture and medicine, cultural differences between East and West and how these differences influence scientific endeavors. Provides consulting services to numerous scientific companies and institutions both in the U.S. and Internationally. Key projects include:
Consultant for Robigo Biosciences in Blacksburg, VA and Dorsan Biofuels in Raleigh, NC.
Adjunct Professor (10-year appointment) for the Australian National University, Canberra; performs ad hoc academic lectures for universities including the University of Hamburg.
Community organizer and liaison for wetlands restoration with San Diego Canyonlands.
Provides scientific manuscript review and editing for JAM Post.
CELGENE CORPORATION, San Diego, CA 2011 – 2013
Senior Principal Research Scientist
Contributed to several different projects dedicated to finding a novel treatment strategy for different cancers including nonsolid tumors and blood cancers such as multiple myeloma, leukemia, and lymphoma.
Participated in conduct of in-depth mechanism and research studies involving one of the company’s leading revenue producers, REVLIMID, needed to predict the drug’s effectiveness.
Researched and produced several major dissertations on topics critical to cancer research, such as role of epigenetics in cancer, and activities of LKB1 (a tumor-suppressor serine-threonine protein kinase).
INDEPENDENT BIOTECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONAL, San Diego, CA 2006 – 2010
Private consultant focused on fungal genomics and molecular plant-microbe interactions.
Volunteer with San Diego Canyonlands, reporting to the Founder, Eric Bowlby
Six month assignment in 2011 in Japan and South Korea, lecturing at various universities, counseling international graduate and undergraduate students on career development, and acting as advisor to a number of academic research programs.
DIVERSA CORPORATION, San Diego, CA 2003 – 2006
Project Team Lead / Research Fellow
Directed multi-disciplinary teams utilizing high throughput protein engineering to develop an antibiotic effective against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), optimizing anti-cancer monoclonal antibodies targeted at specific types of malignant cells. Provided guidance to teams exploring filamentous fungi for the production of
industrial-use enzymes and small molecules.
Managed project team that exceeded company goals for the development of an antibiotic against MRSA.
Created the physical and procedural infrastructure for experimental manipulation of filamentous fungi including the production of metabolites on a pilot plant scale.
Expanded the availability of filamentous fungi isolated from extreme environmental locations such as deep ocean thermal vents, volcanoes, exotic animal feces, and dry alkaline lakebeds.
Assisted in the identification of several fungal extracellular enzymes, greatly enhancing the capacity of cell-free enzyme cocktails to decompose biomasses.
Served on company-wide Research Project Oversight Committee providing reviews and recommendations on all company initiatives and projects to executive management team.
TORREY MESA RESEARCH INSTITUTE, La Jolla, CA 1999 – 2003
Director of Research
Oversaw daily activities focused on applying leading edge genomics technologies to solve practical agricultural problems; involved the isolation, cloning, and functional expression of fungal and plant genes; the objective of this team was to reduce environmental stress on plants imposed by drought, soil salinity, and microbial attack. Identified fungal genes and their products as candidates for roles in virulence; performed functional analysis to conclusively prove the role of each candidate gene in fungal virulence or plant performance.
Directed an elite team of 30 world-renowned scientists.
Sequenced the complete genomes of three filamentous fungi – Cochliobolus heterostrophus (a pathogen of corn), Fusarium graminearum (a pathogen of wheat and corn), and Botrytis cinerea (a wide host range pathogen). This was done at a time when whole genome sequencing was in its infancy, with the focus world-wide on the human genome, i.e., the first human genome was sequenced at a cost of nearly $3 billion, took 13 years, and was completed in 2003. Our 3 fungal genomes were completed in 2002.
**Additional experience as Professor for 28 years at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY and Professor (temporary appointment) for the University of Paris Sud in Orsay, France**
