Natural Generation Ltd

As a sub-contracting electrician, I was tasked with installing a large ground based Solar Array. The site was prone to flooding and so all DC combiner boxes were mounted above 1200mm. It was a 6.5+ MW installation with 3 utility 16000KV SMA inverter stations which were contained in 40 foot containers. The High Voltage section one end, oil cooled transformer in the middle and DC inverter at the other end. As a team, we installed over 22,000 panels and liaised with groundworkers with excavators, concreters, bricklayers and 100 ton crane drivers to complete the job. As the site was so expansive we used quad bikes, ATV’s and 4WD to move quickly through the muddy conditions, which added a further challenging aspect to it.

-Tasks and responsibilities include:

-Termination of 300mm single core SWA into inverter /combiner boxes - Tens of kilometres laid of bare earthing 70mm

-Leading Hand and Job Supervision when manager was off site - 4+ 6mm PV cable from panels to combiner box

-Underground cable laying, ducting and access pits - Welding of brackets for duct supports on bridge

-Use of diesel driven drum feeders and cable winches with sock pullers - Exothermic welding of earth tape at sub station

-Laying of communications cable btw combiner boxes - Terminating RS-485 comms cable at combiners

-Large earthing electrodes around substation - Installation of 45 Combiner boxes

My role at Vaclift introduced me into a different area of expertise as an electrical fitter which also included welding and fabrication skills. I worked with auto electrical systems alongside a senior programmer who installed the PLC’s. The team and I fitted all of the electrical systems on hooklifts, vacuum tankers and waste management vehicles. Installing, testing and commissioning of all components prior to fitting on vehicles.
