Less than 2 months prior, the East German Communist Party announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border (Berlin Wall) whenever they pleased. Each week one or two contract engineer were laid off, I was the last contract engineer let go. Two weeks later, I was the first contract engineer to be called back. My boss at TRW told me that I could go direct but the Soviet Union was collapsing and major layoffs were on the horizon. Therefore, I resigned and accepted a direct position at Harpers.
