Multi-billion leader in the nuclear industry; Toshiba acquired firm in 2008

Westinghouse Liaison to Toshiba, Talent Exchange Assignment Yokohama, Japan. 7- 12/2015

Assignment: Establish relationships between Westinghouse and Toshiba’s nuclear components manufacturing sites; communicated mainly in Japanese. Timeframe: 6 months. Built relationships with and between directors of operations for each site, and design engineers and Keihin production (large module construction). Benchmarked production control and scheduling methods with production control groups, and improvement projects from Nissan and other local manufacturers. Introduced Keihin to Process Safety Analysis used in OSHA Covered Processes. Participated in Yokohama regional manufacturers’ quality circle.

Lead focused communication between companies. Targeted 2 similar plants across organizations to collaborate purchase orders to level-load production at both Westinghouse and Toshiba Sites.

Studied Kaizen and Lean Manufacturing applied to manufacturing power generation equipment for implementation in US at Westinghouse Facilities.

Identified significant improvement opportunities for Westinghouse after studying Toshiba’s highly optimized Keihin facility.

Provided feedback to Toshiba on improvement opportunities. Shared strengths of Westinghouse.

Chemical and Project Engineer Nuclear Fuel Division Ogden, UT

Lead projects through entire project lifecycle (concept, scope, requirements, design, procurement, installation, testing, and commissioning) to improve production processes and capabilities while lowering water usage, utility costs, and raw materials used in aging plant. $2.5 million annual project spend.

Project: Build entire production process (hafnium tetrachloride). Budget: $1.5 million. Timeframe: 1 year. Designed entire production process, and new equipment, utilities, and buildings to house process. Led procurement activities (electrical, structural, and mechanical elements). Managed installation and commissioning, and initial production process. Trained operators, mechanics, and other engineers to operate and maintain production process. Received George Westinghouse Signature Award for meeting all project goals.

Completed on time and on budget and met or surpassed all quality requirements.

Achieved 1-year buy back period; first order produced in < 1 year.

Net income increased $3 million in 3 years.

Project: Design, procure, install and commission new production process. Budget: $750,000. Timeframe: 2 years. Major change for plant that completely revised operating parameters and measurement criteria and required extensive knowledge transfer. Provided instruction and hands-on training to operators, mechanics, process engineers, supervisors, electricians, and instrument technicians.

Met all project milestones and final deadline on-time and on budget.

Reduced wastewater produced 15,000 gallons daily (savings up to 100% at production line level).

Decreased annual raw material cost $75,000.

Lowered solid waste 50 tons annually.

Achieved successful process operation without incident while reducing risk for ~ 1 year.

Other project results

Resolved a $1,000,000 production bottleneck in 1 week after being contacted that plant had shutdown for 1 month.

Performed economic analysis and estimated financial risk, return and capital required for 2 entire production processes to be used to produce 2 different types of fertilizers/inorganic products.

Lowered waste water generated 20,000 gallons daily by designing and implementing new pollution control system with zero waste (ammonia wet scrubber).
