2015: (not funded) Whisenant, D. Community and Faith Based Participatory Health Promotion Model Serving Medically Underserved, Rural Residents. The purpose of this project is to determine whether an effective, community-based participatory health promotion and disease prevention model successfully implemented in specific areas of rural Alabama and Tennessee can engage residents of medically underserved communities in Walker, Jefferson, and Blount counties to take an active role in improving health in their community.

Three main aims of this project include: (1) Provide free health screenings to participants: referrals if needed. (2)Provide health education information and train community health promoters that have been identified by leaders of faith-based and community organizations. The participants' knowledge of the content to be taught will be evaluated prior to the educational sessions and then retested at the end of the training. The topics for the educational sessions will be determined from analysis of data collected from a Health Education Needs

Assessment survey and will include topics such as chronic disease prevention, nutrition, exercise, etc. (3)

Provide free physical activity opportunities for program participants. ($38,000)

2015:(not funded) Sobecky, P., Cemen, I, & Whisenant, D. Coupling Fundamental Science with Community Engagement on Environmental Exposure and Health Risks Associated with Hydraulic Fracturing. We propose to couple fundamental research to study the risk of hydraulic fracturing on human health and its effect on our environment with communications and engagement of the public on dissemination of environmental health sciences as it relates to hydraulic fracturing and approaches such as biological remediation processes to mitigate risks to human health. The first objective of our project is to develop an innovative and inexpensive strategy to heal the human-made fractures after most (if not all) of the oil and gas are depleted from an unconventional field. The second objective is to assess the potential health risk related to hydraulic fracking to the individual and within communities.
