Professor – Slippery Rock University. Instructor within the Safety Management major. Developed course material within the college (Workers’ Compensation & Risk Management Insurance Strategies, Hazardous Materials/Waste Management, Transportation Motor Fleet Safety, Incident Investigations, and Emergency Management/Fire Protection), lecture students, and act as academic advisor for over 60 students. Serve on University Forum and a Board Member of the Slippery Rock University Foundation since 2009.

Principal - In March 2011, Jim founded James T. Culligan & Associates, LLC. An independent insurance & risk management consulting firm, located in Oakmont, PA. Jim specializes in identifying and placing commercial insurance programs for more difficult to place industries, specializing in workers’ compensation, professional/general liability, and alternative risk transfer programs.

July 2000 - February 2011

Chief Operating Officer - Synergy Comp Insurance Company. As Chief Operating Officer for Synergy Comp Insurance Company, Jim was responsible for leading all underwriting, marketing, claims and loss prevention activities. Jim also championed Synergy Comp’s strategic plan for the company’s future geographical expansion, and creating a result driven model that has proven over time to consistently bring outstanding results to their customers. Because of Jim’s vision and innovative thinking, he has been written about in Rough Notes Magazine several times over the past 15 years. Currently, Jim is serving as a Board Member of Synergy Comp Insurance Company.

July 1998 – July 2000

Accident Prevention Consultant - EBI, a mono-line workers’ compensation insurance carrier Jim was assigned a $3,000,000 premium book of business with a loss ratio of over 78%. Within one year, he was able to lower the loss ratio to less than 35%.

July 1996 – July 1998

Risk Manager - Monongahela Valley Hospital. Jim was responsible for maintaining and investigating all employee and patient related incidents to prevent workers’ comp and liability claim exposures from occurring. He also developed the Environment of Care Plan to comply with the Joint Commission of Accredited Hospital Organizations.

January 1994 – July 1996

Health and Safety Manager - Paul C. Rizzo Associates, a Civil & Environmental Engineering Company who’s corporate office is located in Monroeville, PA. Jim worked on several consulting projects which included completing Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessment, Storm Water and Spill Prevention Plans in the United States and South America.

December 1992 – January 1994

Safety & Environmental Specialist – Hancor, Inc. located in Findlay, Ohio. Hancor had 15 plants nationwide. Jim was responsible for maintaining all corporate health, safety, workers’ compensation and environmental regulatory compliance.

March 1986 – January 1990

Transportation Specialist – United States Air Force. During his military service, Jim was honored with two Achievement Medals and a Good Conduct Medal. He was also selected as an honored airman to serve on President George Bush’s 1988 Inaugural Committee.
