RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

To further advance the laboratory skills and theoretical insights developed while working as a Graduate Student and Post-Doctoral Researcher under the supervision of Professor Bakthan Singaram; to organize and direct or be an actively contributing member of a vigorous and creative research program in medicinal or synthetic chemistry; to interact in a creative and collaborative manner with members of a research group to fulfill the objectives of the research group and the research institution as well as my own professional goals; to continue to explore and develop new synthetic methodologies for more effectively achieving basic functional group transformations; to explore structure- activity relationships in non-toxic biochemically active compounds to develop new therapeutic agents.

ACADEMIC OBJECTIVES

To further develop the innovative teaching methods and comprehensive library of chemistry teaching publications that I have created over the last twenty years, including the authorship of two university-level organic chemistry laboratory manuals, three volumes of introductory chemistry lecture notes, three volumes of organic chemistry lecture notes, and extensive editorial work with numerous text book publishers on university-level chemistry texts.

AREAS of RESEARCH

Development of novel synthetic methodologies for the synthesis of optically active compounds of biological, medicinal, and synthetic significance; development and utilization of modified metal hydride reagents; synthesis and development of terpene- based reagents for the asymmetric transformation of functional groups; the synthesis of modified cysteine derivatives and their interactions with the “cysteine switch” in matrix metalloproteinases.
