NASP (Network Architecture, System and Protocols) research group is a part of the networking research lab in the department of Computer Science and Technology-清华大学.

Role: Graduate Research Assistant-Tsinghua University June 2014-December 2015

Previous research experience in the virtualization and SDN technologies for future cloud-based infrastructures. End-up with a thesis in the performance evaluation of the packet forwarding in NFV (software-defined network functions) using flexible commodity servers (x86) and open source frameworks (DPDK, KVM, OpenvSwitch, OpenStack, Linux).

Systems: CentOS, FreeBSD, Ubuntu, Fedora, VMware ESX 5.5, Windows Azure.

Hardware: Dell PowerEdge R230II, Asrock Z97 Extreme6, Intel 10Gbe Dual Ports NICs.

Accomplishments:

Worked in a team of 10 junior engineers to provide high performance networking applications in the cloud.

Focus in the performance tuning and system optimization of the TCP/IP stack to increase the speed of the packet processing over Linux operating system (multiple 10Gbps links).

Implemented software-based switches, routers, load balancers, VPN/firewalls and NAT on top of open-source solutions such DPDK, Open vSwitch, OpenDaylight, KVM/Xen, and flexible and low-cost commodity servers (Intel x86).

Analyze and design a new network architecture based on Gigabit Ethernet technologies, with new routing/switching devices, servers and storage systems. Maintain the local and wide area internet/intranet, and VoIP networks utilizing Cisco and Windows/Linux utilities. 24/7 system monitoring and documentation of more than 500 network devices. Backup design over 1 Terabyte of data.
