There was a bid stage for a telecomm project across London Underground to replace telecommunication elements entire the tube network that the client asked joint ventures to provide them with bid programme in P6 software and baseline the plan for further actions in project execution period by the following stages;

Move the client mpp proposal to Primavera P6

Reduce the contingent time allowance

Optimise internal recourses to the programme in order to achieve the deadline (May 2020).

Familiarisation with design office and installation team was top priority for planning element to define two different calendars for design & installation.

Different type of approaches was made to complete the planning element by the following commitment;

Converting mpp to xls file and modify the xls to be compatible for xer format.

Find out what is the overall project size as there were a number of stakeholders dealing with this multidisciplinary project.

Using multiple skills in terms of planning toolsets Ms Project/ Ms Excel/ Primavera P6.

Discussing duration/resources and cost information with PM and project engineer on a regular basis.

Re-shape programme format to make a similar picture by customer and contractor such as design area and installation period as a twist across the plan.

Define corrective actions to have more than one option at the time i.e. editing calendars to work for longer hours, modify relationships and assign lags to the programme.

Also interfacing equipment providers including SIEMENS, ABB and installation companies to install towers, equipments, storages, packages, etc. For Quality Management, technical inspectors used to liaison with Sasol Project Team. In this respect WBS was defined to divide project to controllable parts.

Following duties within Pre-construction & Construction phases including Pre-turn around / turn around and major construction as well as heavy excavation, concrete pouring, grading, levelling, structural works and MEP building services (Mechanical. Electrical & Plumbing works);

An EPCC project included four main contracts namely; C2 Cracker, MD/HD PE, LD PE and Offsite (Utilities, substations, control room& laboratories).

As an owner perspective Sasol Project Controls Team used to oversee all the above scopes of work by providing IPS, progress reports, cost analysis and EVA (Earned Value Analysis). In this respect the Planning Engineer strived on the following responsibilities and commitments;

Defining two key milestones for pre-com & commissioning phases for start-up and shut down plans and maintenance scheduling as well as insulation, scaffolding, painting refurbishment and package installation for laboratories, control station and satellite station.

Provision of planning and project controls service as well as contracts knowledge to prepare the Integrated Project Schedule, Primavera experience, Site visit, liaison internally and externally (with contractors, vendors and inter disciplines), attending regular meetings and supply chain collaboration.

Plan and monitor the contract budgets and costs

Manage and monitor the selection and of all schedule, equipment and materials on the contract.

Measure progress and any operational difficulties and commercial implications to the contractors.

Manage negotiations with the contractors where any variations and changes to contract carry implications.

Plan operations in conjunction with considering PMS ‘progress measurement system’.

Double check all works with Planning Head and Site Supervisors to make sure works are carried out to acceptable standards.

Prioritize detailed tasks, subtasks and activities using Primavera to avoid interruption and delays in.

Earned Value analysis on a regular basis to find out what the future of the project looks like in terms of being on time and under budget using SPI, CPI, cost variance and schedule variance. Likewise review the critical path activities considering the progress line to find out the activities, which may delay project delivery, and highlighting them to make project management aware of such problems ‘ Warning Signs’.

Provision of progress status monthly and annually using daily and weekly database in different periods of project time.

Using Primavera Pertmaster to provide visual risk reports as well as tornado graphs and distribution graphs to report how schedule risk affects the IPS.
