Student Assistant- Russell Ranch Sustainable Agricultural Facility September 2013-April 2014 Duties: Grind soil samples using a mortar and pestle for a multi-plot, long-term study. Organize dried tomato samples and grind them, grind soil samples to carry out a study of soil moisture content, perform sound experiment procedures, weigh and record precise weights of soil samples, enter data into Excel spreadsheet and check for accuracy, cleaning tins to reuse in the soil moisture study.
Beekeeper at UC Davis Harry H. Laidlaw Jr. Honey Bee Research Facility
April 2013-August 2013 Duties: Beekeeping of honey bee colonies for UC Davis research, check to make sure the queen is present and laying eggs, collection of bee samples (foragers and workers) into falcon centrifuge tubes to be used in UC Davis entomology laboratories, make and use smoker to open a hive and calm the honey bees, perform proper sampling techniques (not touching the bees in the tube to keep contamination at a minimum, using carbon dioxide to knock them out for a few seconds in order to easily funnel them into the falcon tube, and carefully labeling each tube), honey production (using hot knife to uncap brood, loading centrifuge, which spins to extract the honey, filtering the honey, and bottling), water decorative and bee- attracting plants at the facility, work to reduce small hive beetles and wax moth larvae in the colonies by using Varroa mite sticky boards to catch honey bees in order to monitor their abundance.
Rat Colony Internship- UC Davis Nutrition Department
April 2012-June 2012 Duties: Care for rodents used in nutrition studies at UC Davis, colony management, daily maintenance of rats and mice colonies, provide unsupervised husbandry of the animals: changing cages, racks, water bottles, and feeding, cleaning the facility, monitor health status and well-being of the animals, update health records, record detailed records of health and behavior, record temperature and humidity of animal rooms, monitor litters born, proper handling and use of equipment and cleaning chemicals.
Animal Rescue Kompany (ARK) Volunteer
