Manufacturing Engineer

Responsibilities: My daily activities focused on continuous monitoring of plant production and equipment such as

distillation columns, dibasic evaporators, pumps, jets, heat exchangers, and chemical process tanks. Additionally I

held the main technical leadership role with respect to troubleshooting system problems in the continuous plant acid

purge system and determining the root problems or causes for malfunctions whether process or equipment related.

Became team member to a multimillion dollar adipic acid controls upgrade project. This involved revising the

control definitions, several control loops, and mechanical and physical setups. Technical skills include process control

troubleshooting, SAP, All-In-One, Aspen, and Hysis. As well as DCS DELTA V. Also became the On-Call Engineer for 25% of the Acid production side of the chemical plant.

Major Accomplishments:

Discovered production losses in the purge system, and with team members found a non-capital approach to save

approximately 840k/yr. Worked on other cost savings projects that totaled approximately 1.7 million/year. Solved

a plant-wide purge-tank equipment problem that baffled all other prior engineers with regards to operations and

crystallization into a continuous operating chemical pipeline.

Responsibilities: Researched, designed, and tested membrane separation technologies for semiconductor and energy

product companies, such as fuel cell/reformer companies and entities. Collaborated with team members to market and

license our technology. Served as Safety Trainer for Technicians and other employees for several laboratories.

Major Accomplishments:

Designed, developed, and authored a patented hydrogen reclamation system.

U.S. Patent No: 06881242 “Hydrogen reclamation apparatus and Method”. Received: (04/19/05)

Produced and tested hydrogen selective purifiers for a German (U.S. owned) stealth submarine program and other

institutes. I aided in the design and built from scratch a testing panel specific to this program. Forged laboratory testing

methods and experiments for a synthetic gas mixing station with the purpose of testing multiple customer test gases under

various design operating conditions. This project required wiring this station from scratch and finalizing the software

development. Gained first hand experience with operations of zirconium carbonate and zirconium tetrachloride

production (intermediate product for pure zirconium), as well as the production of hafnium and titanium

metals. I held a Control Room Position monitoring the chemical and metals operations. I also trained technicians of all

skill levels in operations with regards to monitoring the process feed and products from reactors and reduction units.

Additionally, I was responsible for finding the root cause to problems and having them fixed under stringent time frames.

Fuel Processing Test Engineer (06/00 – 03/01)

Responsibilities: Characterized, developed, and improved the design of fuel cell reformers, developed improved process

control schemes and presented to the Controls group. Other roles included working with Ph D. Engineers to improve

combustion processes and catalyst design as well as design and set up bench tests and instrumentation to study

reformer/reactor/component performance and reliability. Managed two continuous life-cycle testing labs with one

dedicated to reformers and the second lab dedicated to final testing and characterization of complete reformer-fuel cell

systems for final customer deliveries. I was responsible for leading all of the troubleshooting activities in these two labs.

Major Accomplishments:

Began implementing the Six Sigma process to help determine where variability in reactor performance occurred. Provided

Labview Coding/debugging support for the purpose of improving reformer operation. Learned how to troubleshoot

electrical/electronic mechanical components of the reformer and fuel cell stack. Taught short courses company wide on

these systems and held leadership and supporting roles in training technicians.

Process Engineer (11/98 – 06/00)

Responsibilities: Improved the design of electro-reduction cells used to produce aluminum metal from bauxite ore.

Major Accomplishments:

As the Potlining Process Engineer, I redesigned the internal construct of the electro-reduction cell and instituted many

standard installation practices, as well as reviewed the failure mechanisms of the electro reduction cells. Worked with

technical Salesmen and Engineers on testing new materials, electrodes, and designs in the electro-reduction cell. Headed

various projects in the continuous aluminum smelting plant where process flows, controls and operations needed redesign

or upgrading. Two projects which highlight my involvement include co-project lead on the upgrade of a new crusher

system for the Anode Department and co-engineering project coordinator of systems controls project upgrade for plant

wide process controls. Additionally I was responsible for analyzing trends in consumption and production, and made

predictions based on these trends. Served additionally as a Translator for Bosnian-Herzegovinan Laborers.
