Professional Experience
Maynard Steel Casting Co. Milwaukee, WI
Metallurgist Oct 2015 - Present
Perform failure analysis on materials and provide root cause analysis for failures and customer complaints.
Read blueprint, select material and enter the metallurgical information on purchase order.
Monitor material chemistry using spectroscopy during melting and document the data.
Prepare samples for the metallographic analysis and characterize using SEM, EDS, XRD and optical microscope.
Perform chemical and mechanical testing on the samples and maintain the metallurgical laboratory.
Prepare heat treatment and welding procedure for each casting based on customer requirements.
Perform cost reduction and process optimization using six sigma principles.
Conduct internal and external process audits at finishing lines.
Research Experience
Iowa State University Ames, IA
Master’s Research-2 Jan 2015 - July 2015
Performed research to study cold-spray as a method for repair of casting porosity discovered after final machining.
Performed metallographic and hardness tests (Rockwell & Brinell) on the samples and gained exposure to ASTM standards.
Repaired the casting defects using cold-spray technique and characterized the repaired samples to use cold-spray as a lower cost alternative to weld repair.
Master’s Research-1 May 2014 - Dec 2014
Performed research to improve the quality of high alloy CA6NM stainless steel.
Investigated the processing routes to achieve the hardness to reduce susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking.
Implemented different heat treatment techniques and determined the effect of cooling rate and final quench temperature on final hardness.
Monitored the phase transformations during heat treatment and examined the results using SEM, XRD and optical microscope.
Internships
Indian Institute of Science Bangalore, India
Engineering Intern Dec 2012 - Feb 2013
Produced and characterized (using SEM) open cell aluminum foam.
Designed and implemented methods for replacement of copper foam in the heat exchanger applications by open cell aluminum foam.
Lucas TVS Chennai, India
Research Intern May 2012 - Aug 2012
Performed research to identify the effect of tin and nickel plating on joining of dissimilar metals by resistance welding and developed for the entire research project.
Planned and organized the work design for team of 4 interns.
RINL Steel Plant Visakhapatnam, India
Inplant Training Oct 2011 - Nov 2011
Analyzed and studied the process of steel making, AOD, VOD and rolling mills.
