Engineering Career

Engineering professional with automotive experience, in load and NVH sensitive assemblies of chassis and powertrain from start to finish global programs, that includes product integration, validation and launch with a greater velocity in achieving branded products at optimized cost. Developed component design/development/analysis/cost, and strong internal/external/customer collaboration skills as my forte that can be used to achieve your organizational goals.

Areas of Expertise

Customer specifications, DFMEA, DVP&R and SC/CC cascade for size, cost, weight, quality, and key dates through regular communications to relevant cross functional teams.

3D CAD Design/FEA analysis, engineering calculations and BOM release processes/controls.

Cost modelling/estimation, quote preparation/evaluation, make/buy studies, competitive benchmarking, and developing/presenting component strategies with its project plan to council.

Strategic component integration into Caterpillar and automotive OEMs, while managing budgets, key milestones, APQP, risk and supplier management.

Career Highlights

Achieved over $10M in cost savings through robust product development leadership and expertise in multiple chassis and powertrain structural/NVH assemblies.

Integrated APQP, Six-sigma and gateway into efficient component development process that resulted in successful launches of unique products such as CVT mounts/Aluminum shafts at Caterpillar, and V-arm FLCA/Aluminum LCA at ZF/GM.

Caterpillar Six Sigma Black Belt Certified (DFSS). Coached staff and management teams through design guides, standard practices and lesson learned. Owned agenda, deliverables, timelines, executive summaries of PDT meetings and monthly council reports.

Core Product Experience

Structural assemblies: Cast, forged, stamped, extruded and tubular steel/aluminum parts such as control arms, stabilizer bars/links, coil springs, frame brackets and cross members, transmission and motor shafts, yokes, flanges, universal joints and drive shafts for automotive chassis, suspension and powertrain.

Linear/Rotational NVH assemblies: Rubber bushings for powertrain mounts/suspension, and outer/inner vibration dampers (TVDs) for driveline tuning

Professional Experience and Accomplishments

Caterpillar Inc. - Peoria, IL 2008 – Present

Component Engineering Specialist

Managed an annual engineering component spend of $75M for the quality, design, development and management of suppliers and engineering resources. Served as the interface for technical and non-technical staff and suppliers globally (India, China & Europe). Developed, established and implemented standard drawings, practices, lessons learned and APQP documents. Mentored engineers.

Drive shafts

a)Prepared a $20M quotation package for new generation drive shafts with 10% lower cost/weight and worldwide supplier sourcing. Chaired design reviews, evaluated quotes based on product QCLDM, integrated and launched new drive shafts for Caterpillar product lines from start to finish with cross functional buy offs, APQP and new facilities in China and Europe.

b)Collaborated with purchasing and product support teams to compile and analyze after-market business portfolio ($30M) of universal joints. Prepared and presented -size universal joint design idea as a strategy in collaboration with supplier. Prepared budget, DVP & R, milestones, resources and assumptions for component council. This unique size would bring lost business to Caterpillar.

c)Wrote design guide. Developed drive shaft assembly cost model and cost target.

Transmission/Steering Column/Electric Motor shafts

a)Analyzed packaging space for the given loads and NVH requirements. Selected standard material with proper heat treatment. Calculated natural frequencies. Prepared standard DFMEA/DVP&R in collaboration with suppliers and assembly engineers. Cascaded SC/CCs and designs. Supported preparations of PFMEA/CP.

b)Designed, analyzed, procured and validated aluminum shaft for an electric drive application that reduced a weight of 775 lb per mining truck.

Powertrain Mounts

a)Designed, developed and validated CVT mounts and powertrain mounts from start to finish for wheel loader application. Led cross-functional teams and suppliers to complete DVP&R and APQP. This resulted in resolving a NVH issue of transmission and NPI showstopper.

Ford/Allavard Rajna (AR) /Eagle Picher (EP) – Dearborn, MI 2003 – 2008

Senior Resident Engineer

Learned AR’s design software of stabilizer bar and coil-spring and used it to produce concepts. Collected and cascaded customer specifications. Prepared DFMEA/DVP& R and held design reviews. Coached and collaborated with overseas engineers for prototypes and production. Learned EP’s design software of damper rubber strips (TVDs), and used it to produce drawings. Learned Plexus software for project management activities.

Stabilizer Bar/Link & Coil Spring

a)For the first time, ever, launched AR products in North America for Ford 500 full size car

ZF-Lemforder Corp - Northville, MI 2001 - 2003

Design & release Engineer

Responsible for customer interface, product specifications, APQP, cost estimation, release drawings/BOM, and plant support for PPAP

Control Arms

a)Designed, analyzed, validated, and then released V-arm FLCA in lieu of A-arm using perpendicular grain flow to load concept. V-arm with 15% lower stiffness performed 15% better in F/A durability than A-arm. This design reduced bar size/press tonnage and saved 20 $ / vehicle for GMT 800-900.

b)Developed an extruded aluminum LCA with a reduced weight of 4.7 lb/veh and a cost saving of $1.5M in lieu of steel stamped LCA for GM and created a program for ZF/GM.

Krupp Fabco - Windsor, Ontario 1992 - 2000

Product Engineer

Learned and used Catia for 3D models and 2D drawings. Learned and used FEA Nastran to analyze design concepts.

I then became product development engineer for power train mounts.

Welded Stamping Assemblies & Powertrain Mounts

a)Developed, analyzed, validated and implemented mount brackets for 1998 DCX car.

Education

M. A. Sc. (Mechanical), University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Focus: Design for NVH and Strength.

Thesis: Bending stress concentration of spur gears for transmission design. Patented gear design software through university.

B. E. (Mechanical), University of Gujrat, Ahmadabad, India.

Project: Compiled and studied function/specifications of equipment. Determined process, transportation, inspection, delay and packing time. Prepared work flow and floor plan. Separated manual and automated material handling, and identified an automation opportunity in work flow.
