07 October 2010 - 16 March 2011 STTA Labor Law Advisor

My research on this project examined the impact of cultural variables on behaviors and demonstrated a need to fully reorganize labor law in Indonesia. I designed, planned and implemented research study based on primary and secondary research protocols, I identified, surveyed and interviewed key

Stake Holders. These encounters which were part of focus groups conducted in response to observing changes, including interviews, to determine the effects of Labor legal criterion on the average citizen (Minimum Wage).

Collection of Data:

To implement this research, I conducted legal procedural analysis in Bahasa Indonesia and English. The data collection included conducting survey research with the local population on cost of living and

labor rates. On my visits into rural villages, I collected 60 in-depth interviews from civilian populations

conducting interviews eliciting views, politicians, traditional rulers, local government officials and NGOs in both rural and urban rural settings.

I performed quantitative data analysis of collected data that was inputted into MS Excel matrices. I performed qualitative analysis of the data to assess the political economy of reform efforts, and determine organizational cultural mediators. Throughout the research project, I held weekly briefings to government officials regarding progress and content of work for final report to USAID. The result of

this research is a series of recommended courses of action detailed in a USAID publication I authored on Indonesia Labor Law reform initiates, disseminated internationally (BGI Road map for 2010 to

2015 procedural advancements in LaborLaw jurisprudence in Indonesia).

I was selected for this project for my socio-cultural knowledge of Indonesia and extensive publication experience (32 articles published). The goal of the project is to construct and author the inception report to assist the government of Indonesia in gaining accession to the UNECE 1958 agreement. My data collection included in-depth interviews of subject matter experts in both the public and private sectors. I performed qualitative data analysis to examine the advantages of gaining accession from both political and economic perspective. The result of this research was a report I authored and presented via MS PowerPoint on the advantages of gaining accession, specifically how it would open doors and

increase businesses ability to work on an international level.

06 March 2008 - 26 October 2008 STTA Team Leader Supporting Indonesia’s accession to the 1958 Agreement.

The purpose of this research was to assess if program has achieved its stated objectives, as well as

to determine the impact of the program on various stakeholders through trade capacity building. To do this, I designed a research project to assess improvements in the ability of public sector organizations to perform appropriate tasks. I began by analyzing background documents related to the support provided by the EU to Indonesia's civil society and the previous research conducted by project experts on the EU/GoI Trade Support Program. My data collection included interviews I conducted with civil society organizations and manufacturing companies in order to identify needs to support Indonesia’s successful participation in the WTO. I also collected data from focus group workshops by recording feed-back regarding the program. I performed data analysis via qualitative assessment of whether the project had adequately analyzed all assumptions and risks. I used this understanding to train and provide technical assistance to Indonesian government officials and other stakeholders necessary for participation in multilateral trade negotiations, in alignment with WTO policies and standards. I presented my research results as recommendations for supporting economic and social recovery through upgrades to import and export procedures. My report also increased understanding of rights and obligations of WTO membership as well as awareness of international and EU trade regulations.

It was through this program, from my years of Powertrain Engineering, that I was requested by high ranking members of the Ministry of Trade, to hold an hour- long televised presentation for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on plausible emissions reductions though the implementation of new technologies in the major cities of Indonesia.

I presented the results in a round table event attended by over 40 members of the Indonesian press, in addition to all concerned government officials. The research findings from this project were featured in over 40 international publications: http://pdf.usaid.gov/pdf_docs/PNADO867.pdf

From my work with GM, and fluency in Japanese obtained from my time in the Military in Japan, Ford had offered me an assignment to work on their Joint Venture with Mazda Motor Company

What was supposed to be a two year assignment, kept me living in Hiroshima over twelve years, and afforded me the ability to pursue my academics under challenging circumstances, yet; in hindsight, by far one of the best assignments of my career path. An assignment the changed daily, and my ability to speak, read and write Japanese was useful for upper management as well as being the Chair for many meeting between the Japanese and Americans on several levels, including those outside my own area of expertise.
