Mill Component Operations Manager

Manage three Production Managers and five Production Supervisors, consisting of 300 hourly employees producing 11,000 doors and 10,000 face frames per day. Responsible for the manufacturing functions of all mill operations, five frame component machining cells, three frame assembly operations, four door component machining cells, three door assembly clamps, three door profiling lines, two wide belt sanding lines and specialty machining and assembly cells.

An OSHA recordable injury rate of 0.48 was maintained with no lost time accidents.

Assisted in facilitating the $30 million Plant Expansion project by serving on the Mill Expansion Team and working with Corporate and local personnel resources.

Completed one-week training course in Leadership & Cultural Change.

Contributed to the Continuous Improvement Program initiatives by participating in Lean Activities. Performed the lead responsibilities on an On-Time-Complete Delivery Continuous Improvement event. On-Time-Complete Delivery is currently 99.2% pieces.

Production Manager (First Shift)

Manage one Rough Mill Production Supervisor, two Mill Machining Line Production Supervisors and two Finishing Line Production Supervisors, consisting of 200 hourly employees. Responsible for the manufacturing functions of all rough mill operations, five flooring mill lines and two finishing lines.

An OSHA recordable injury rate of 1.4 was maintained with no lost time accidents.

The shift square foot per labor hour improved by 5 percent, a $300,000 annualized savings.

Yield and On-Time-Complete delivery goals were met.

Zamma Corporation (Orange, VA): June 2013 – January 2014

Vice President of Manufacturing

Responsible for manufacturing functions at two facilities. Manage one Maintenance Supervisor, two Shipping Supervisors and two Production Supervisors, consisting of 150 hourly employees. The main plant manufactures moldings and floor transitions from MDF, hardwoods and vinyl substrates utilizing a variety of overlays and finishes the hardwood products. The laminate plant supplies the main plant with treated paper and vinyl laminates.

Masco Cabinetry (Ann Arbor, MI): December 1984 – March 2013

Plant Manager, Atkins Virginia Door and Panel Plants: June 2006 – March 2013

Responsible for all plant functions including budgeting and P&L. Managed six Department Managers: two Production Departments, Quality Assurance, Materials, Human Resources including SHE, and Plant Engineer/Maintenance Manager including the CI program. Their staffs consist of eleven Supervisors and 330 hourly employees. The door plant operation dries lumber, cuts dimension stock, assembles and sands the doors. The panel plant produces the veneered flat and raised center panels, by cutting engineered wood and veneer from flitch and pressing the veneer to the substrate. Both plants are equipped with finishing lines.

Reduced scrap 26 percent from $2.94 per unit to $2.18, an annualized savings of $950,000.

Managed the introduction of a veneered particleboard core slab door. Saved $300,000 annually by reducing outsourced purchasing.

Performed $1.3 million dollars better than budget.

Reduced total plant labor by 5.6%, an annualized savings of $500,000.

Door through put processing time was reduced from five days to less than four, reducing inventory by $400,000 and improving On-Time-Complete delivery from 97.4 % to 98.6%.

Managed the planning and installation of $4 million in capital projects.

Requested to serve on Corporate Architecture Conversion Team due to broader knowledge than other production candidates. Established a common geometry design between Masco brands.

Plant Manager, Rapid City South Dakota Plant: August 2004 – May 2006

Responsible for all plant functions including P&L. Managed seven Department Managers; two Production Departments, Quality Assurance, Materials, Human Resources, Accounting and the Plant Engineer/Maintenance Manager. Their staffs consist of seventeen supervisors and 280 total hourly employees. Production Departments included; particleboard production of 100 million sq. ft. basis and the particleboard component manufacturing mill.

Worked with Corporate Engineering, Material Control and Quality Control to initiate the vinyl laminate to paper laminate conversion. The annualized laminate conversion savings were $2,000,000.

Managed capital projects totaling $3.7 million.

Assisted Corporate in developing Corporate-wide capacity matrix, providing the basis to sustain 5-day delivery during peak demand. Identified capacity deficiencies and developed plans to maximize capacity.

Production Manager, Rapid City South Dakota Plant: January 1994 – July 2004

Responsible for managing the particleboard component manufacturing laminating and cut-to-size dimension mill, consisting of eight supervisors and 150 to 230 employees.
