Southwest CARE Center - CFO March 14 - Present
Southwest CARE Center (SCC) (Santa Fe, NM) is a HIV/AIDS clinic founded during the AIDS crisis of the early 90’s. It has been a recipient of federal funds through the Ryan White program for nearly 20 years. Several years ago, the organization merged with a 45-year-old womens health clinic and expanded into primary care to poise itself to become a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC). The organization has grown revenue by more than 300% in the past two years and staffing has grown by more than 400%. I joined Southwest CARE Center as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in March 2014 after working with them for nearly nine months as a healthcare consultant. During that time, I have paid off all of the long-term debt and tripled reserves. My operational focus has been on building infrastructure to ensure the growing organization has a solid foundation upon which to grow.
Worked collaboratively with the CEO to develop a new organizational chart/structure
Worked collaboratively to prepare for the FQHC on-site to determine preparedness for FQHC status
Engaged consultants around the human resources function:
oPerform a high level, high risk assessment
oDevelop a market based compensation philosophy and wage scale
oEvaluate the HR need and source a HR professional, hired the Chief HR Officer (CHRO)
Developed a Compliance Manager role and hired to fill the position
Engaged consultants to perform a revenue cycle review around provider documentation, coding, billing, patient access and medical records essentially to baseline our starting point.
oDeveloped a Revenue Cycle Manager role and hired to fill the position
oEngaged providers and nursing staff around documentation education
oContinue to engage around further development of revenue cycle functions
Currently chair the Steering Committee for selection and implementation of a new EMR to support the reporting requirements for both the Ryan White and FQHC programs
Developed a Director of Finance, Planning and Analysis role and hired to fill the position
oImplemented zero based budgeting concept
oWorking with the Director to operationalize the new Federal requirements around program costs, allocation of costs and allowance of costs as well as other financial implications
Currently in process to replace the current accounting system with a more robust system to track programs and services, revenue and expenses, both pre and post allocation of overhead
Currently in process to in-source the payroll and time keeping systems in collaboration with the CHRO
Currently in process to add a Human Resources Information System in collaboration with the CHRO
In-sourced the Information Technology function due to growth of the organization and moving to new EMR.

Developed a Grants & Contracts Manager role to oversee the administrative requirements and coordinated deliverables with federal, state and local grants and contracts as well as insurance (payer) contracts, and hired to fill the position

Paynesville Area Health Care System – CFO/COO Apr 12-June 13
Paynesville Area Health Care System (PAHCS) (Paynesville, MN) was a hospital district that joined the CentraCare System (St. Cloud, MN) October 1, 2013. While the CFO, I was working through the due-diligence process to determine if PAHCS should align with CentraCare. I was also coordinating the implementation of EPIC for our electronic health record. In my short tenure at the facility, I reduced debt 30% while increasing reserves 25%. I left PAHCS to pursue healthcare consulting with a regional firm in Albuquerque, NM.
New River Medical Center – Controller Oct 09-Mar 12
New River Medical Center (NRMC) (Monticello, MN) was a District Hospital on the western edge of the Minneapolis metro. NRMC offers diverse services, which includes an Inpatient Rehab Unit, an 89-bed nursing home, and a Cancer Center. It has several joint ventures with other metro hospitals, including real estate holdings, a clinic, and cancer center. The Controller position was created for succession planning of the CFO. I was charged with overseeing the finance and accounting functions, revenue cycle including patient access, procurement function, reporting, budgeting, cost reporting, annual audits, etc. I left NRMC to return to an administrative position where my skill set could be more fully utilized.
Family HealthCare Center - CFO Jan 09-Oct 09
Family HealthCare Center (FHC) is a Federally Qualified Health Center located in downtown Fargo, ND. Worked collaboratively on several projects with the CEO while strengthening the internal controls and systems, supporting the newly implemented practice management system, developed a new accounting chart of accounts to better track revenue and costs.
ELEAH Medical Center – Interim CFO/COO May 07-Nov 08
ELEAH Medical Center is located in Elbow Lake, Minnesota with three satellite clinics and a clinic and outpatient surgical center in Morris, Minnesota. I provided administrative and financial leadership, coordinated the acquisition of a free-standing clinic and surgical center in Morris, MN, coordinated the selection of the EMR, coordinated the acquisition and renovation of existing space to place an on-site CT, supported the reorganization of the Hospital Auxiliary and subsequent development of a thrift shop run by volunteers, enhanced the understanding of Critical Access Hospital cost based reimbursement methodology.
Divine Providence Health Center/Avera - CEO Aug 05 – Apr 07
Divine Providence Health Center/Avera was a Catholic sponsored medical facility located in Ivanhoe, Minnesota. The medical complex currently has a small nursing home and clinic, the hospital closed in March 2007, during my tenure and under my facilitation at the Boards direction. The facility had a management contract with Avera in Sioux Falls, SD.

The medical facility has a management contract with the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation Health System of Fargo, ND.
