Resume:

Mina Seif, Ph.D., P.E.

Summary

I am currently a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), working as a Research Structural Engineer in the Materials and Structural Systems Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). I started working at NIST when I was awarded a two-year American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (NIST-ARRA) Post-Doctoral Fellowship, and was subsequently hired as a Research Structural Engineer. For over fourteen years, I have been conducting nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) for my day-to-day work. I have continuously and extensively used FEA software packages such as ABAQUS, ANSYS, LS-DYNA, and HyperWorks (HyperMesh, and HyperView). At NIST, I have studied structural behavior under realistic fire loading for the purpose of developing simplified tools and guidelines for performance-based design of steel structures at elevated temperatures, thus increasing their overall structural robustness. I received a MSc followed by a PhD in Civil Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University in December 2010, with a dissertation focusing on the cross-sectional stability of high-strength structural steel, where stability becomes a main issue in any hazardous loading event. I also earned a MSc in Structural Engineering from Cairo University in 2005, where my thesis focused on seismic

(earthquake) evaluation of the performance of reinforced concrete buildings. I was recently elected as Chair of the Structural Stability Research Counsel’s (SSRC) Task Group on “Stability under extreme loads” based on my background, experience, and passion for promoting more resilient structures. As part of my SSRC involvement, I was asked to author a chapter on “Stability under Fire Loading” for the seventh edition of the “Guide to Stability Design Criteria for Metal Structures”, in addition to editing the other chapters that involve extreme loads such as earthquakes, blast, and disproportionate collapse. I am also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers/ Structural Engineering Institute’s

(ASCE/SEI) “Fire Protection Committee”, contributing to the “ASCE/SEI Guideline: Structural Fire Engineering”.

In addition to my research work, I have practical design engineering experience, both through working as a designer, and through teaching design classes as an adjunct professor. I believe that my strong academic record and research performance in addition to my practical engineering experience, have prepared me to undertake the challenges of this position. Sincerely,

Mina Seif, Ph.D., P.E.
