To Whom It May Concern,
I am the Senior Safety Coordinator at the Newell/Brooks project for Ellisdon. I have been in construction for over 15 years and narrowed my focus to safety in 2010. I had the pleasure of working with Olubunmi Komolafe, also known as Boom Boom, when he joined the safety team under my direction. Bunmi was one of five team members who were brought to site to increase our presence in the field.
Bunmi came to this project with exactly the approach I was looking for. He has an innate ability to draw the worker in, have him/her look at what could be changed to make a situation safer and to help implement it while allowing the worker to maintain control. He makes suggestions rather than demands; communication is essential in this situation and it is certainly one of Bunmi's strong suits.
Bunmi has a solid understanding of regulation and code and uses practical applications to improve the culture on the job. His desire to learn our specific policies as well as any site specifics that may impact those he is working to protect was evident immediately. As a result of these traits, I gave him two sub-contractors to mentor. This meant helping them understand their obligations, rights and contractual obligations to us, the prime and the client. With his support deadlines were met, paperwork completed and again, an improvement in the communication between our team and the workers on site.
In addition to that responsibility, and due to Bunmi's knowledge on the subject, I put him in charge of the largest, most difficult part of this project, concrete pours. A demanding position Bunmi tackled with steadfast determination and insight. The worker's like "Boom Boom" and relied on his advisement regarding the safety of each pour. It was a combination that worked in our favor. The culture among his crews while challenging to amend, saw the fastest results and the least incidents and near misses when compared to other areas on site.
I was told by a foreman, with a general dislike for safety "officers" that Bunmi had a direct impact on him. "Boom Boom helped me to see what I wasn't able or willing to see before... I like his approach; he's direct, he doesn't waste time, he understands that I'm the same Moving forward the foreman plans to get to know his safety coordinators as individuals. This is an enormous win for safety and the foreman and yet Bunmi did this without likely even being aware of it. He's had an impact on the workers and can be proud of his part in the dramatic decrease in incidents and near misses; and the improvement in culture and morale.
Finally, on a personal note, I've not met another safety coordinator in my 15 years of construction that was as passionate and genuinely concerned about the workers as Bunmi. In an industry where complacency is all too common, we may become less impacted by the stories of injuries. They become just those...stories. That compassion will serve Bunmi well and it certainly served our site well. I would gladly have Bunmi back for any job where assistance was needed because his communication and ability to relate to the worker sets him apart. He is an asset to the industry.
If you have any questions regarding Bunmi and his time on my team, please do not hesitate to call me directly at 403-***-****.
Safe Regards,
Wendy
