Honors: Completed the Gaisce Award, ECDL and a code of ethics course, academic excellence in History

Skills

Laboratory

oFamiliar with laboratory instrumentation and protocols for experiments involving GC, HPLC, TLC, flash column chromatography, gel electrophoresis, extractions (soxhelet extraction, gel extraction, liquid-liquid extraction etc.).

oFamiliar with practical experiments involving complex synthesis of organic compounds, identification of unknown organic compounds, organic rearrangements, accurate titrimetric assays, quality control testing, raw materials testing, rearrangements, grignard reactions, microscale reactions, regioselective and stereoselective reactions and characterization.

oAnalysis of spectra - IR, H1NMR, C13NMR, Mass Spec, UV-vis, COSY, C-H correlation.

oEurachem Analytical Measurement Competition (EAMC) 2014 - I volunteered to participate in the first stage of this competition and was selected to progress into the final 10 students to be chosen for DCU.

Computer and Written

oCompetent at writing lab reports based on experimental data.

oCompleted a literature review entitled ‘Hydrolytic Chemical Nucleases’.

oCompleted a thesis entitled ‘The Development of New Chemical Nucleases’.

oPassed an ECDL course in 2009, and undertook a module named ‘Visualisation and Validation of Lab Data’ which has taught me how to use Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word for analysis of lab data

Analysis and Critical Thinking

oCompleted ‘Advanced Spectroscopic Workshop’ in which many unknown organic compounds were determined by analysis of their Mass Spectrometry, H1NMR, C13NMR and IR spectra.

Time Management

oMany experiments involved making a pre-plan to ensure that the experiment would be finished within the allotted time. This led to a thorough understanding of the chemistry and techniques of the experiment before undertaking it.

oDeadlines consistently met both professionally and academically.

Leadership

oWorking in a summer camp as the head of gymnastics.

oWorking with children for several years had instilled confidence in me to take responsibility and be the adult in charge.
