Summary:
Chemist with 15+ years of successful working experience in sectors such as, Maintenance management, Plant performance monitoring, Process safety (PSM, PHA, HAZOP, RCI), Process development, Process and Project management, R&D, Customer and Plant support in a $100 M turnover per year chlor alkali and water treatment chemicals manufacturing company.
Assumed increasingly responsible roles (Researcher, Plant Leadership, Site Management) to meet company needs in times of growth, takeovers, personnel changes.
Excelled in hiring, coaching, training and developing teams of scientists and engineers
Proficient in unit operations and processes (filtration, drying, electrolysis), process optimization, statistical process control (SPC), continuous improvement and scale-up including operation of pilot plants and pilot filtration units.
Well versed in managing and prioritizing multiple ongoing projects, like managing electrolyser overhaul projects and the brine filtration improvement project in parallel.
Good written and verbal communication skills demonstrated through compilation of numerous technical reports, the writing of standard operating procedures and presentations on completed projects and plant operations to management, as well as internal and external customers.
Skilled in budgeting for the electrolyser maintenance, experienced in the overall operating budgets for the plant and the site.
Knowledge in six sigma and lean manufacturing.
Experience
NCP-CHLORCHEM Jan 1996 to May 2015
Chloorkop Site, Johannesburg, South Africa
Site Technology and Process Safety Manager Aug 2012 – May 2015
Headed the management team of the brine filtration improvement project up to the conclusion of R&D work and pilot studies (predicted saving per year $1.9 M).
Consulted to chlor alkali manufacturer on corrosion and process related problems. Provided the expertise that will help reduce the variable costs by $70 K annually.
Managed the implementation of the process safety management system (PSM); conducted incident investigations; reviewed existing plant (PHA) and new projects; provided training.
Site R&D Leader Sept 2007 – Aug 2012
Managed the technical manager northern section plus a crew of up to 8 unionized workers.
Investigated several accidents and incidents and prevented their repetition. Resulting saving $4 – 5 M.
Successfully managed the planning, scheduling and execution of electrolyzer maintenance at a cost of $0.5-1 M each (three times a year, 34 maintenance cycles in total) without unplanned production downtime.
Improved overall occupational health and safety as well as environmental requirements and legal compliance by plant inspections, requesting changes and improvements to areas such as plant design and material handling.
Provided expertise on corrosion related problems such as heat exchanger or pump as well as cell frame failures. Guided operations and maintenance personnel in finding the correct materials for the respective applications.
Headed the team that carried out the R&D program for a water treatment chemicals plant. The execution of the program reduced process interruptions and batch times by 12% while improving on product quality. Saving $100 k annually.
Decreased annual production costs of $40 M by $800 K and improved product quality by conducting R&D projects that resulted in improvements to processes and raw materials.
Technology Leader Sept 2003 – Aug 2007
Took over the accountability for the management of electrolyzer assets of $30 M, including long-lead items (lead times of 3-8 months).
Improved the response time to plant problems by developing new methods to analyse failed equipment (500k saving per annum).
Enhanced process safety and increased annual turnover by $410 K at chlorine plant through implementation preventative maintenance in the electrolyzer cell house.
Reduced downtime and production costs through R&D and the implementation of MET (Most Efficient Technology).
Technical Leader Oct 2000 – Aug 2003
Took control of chlorine production facility that lacked technical management, established technical knowledge base to achieve efficient, safe and reliable production.
Resolved customer problems and issues as technical expert within a cross functional team of R&D, Quality control, Engineering and Marketing & Sales.
