Study: Effect of Oropharyngeal exercises in treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea
Synopsis: To evaluate the effect of oropharyngeal exercises and transcutaneous electrical stimulation of oropharyngeal muscles in the treatment of mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea
Methodology: Before starting exercises for pharyngeal muscles, transcutaneous electrical stimulation was given to the patients in inclusion criteria to strengthen the lateral pharyngeal muscles and genioglossus muscle. The following regime was used for stimulation,
Using electrical stimulator, ENRAF NONIUS Sonopuls 692VS from Netherland, faradic current with polarity, phase duration 1 ms, phase interval 20ms, output mode CV was given for 6weeks, 3 visits per week, 90 pulse was given in each visit and oropharyngeal exercises was started simultaneously.
Outcome: The study concluded that upper airway exercises can achieve subjective improvement in OSAS symptoms and their polysomonographic abnormalities in patients with mild to moderate OSAS and so can be considered as alternative method of treatment of mild to moderate OSAS.
