Summary

A detail-oriented, self-demanding PhD Materials Engineer seeking an impactful career in materials research and development, especially in metallurgy, welding, heat treatment, and characterization

Education

Ph.D. in Materials Science & Engineering, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH Aug. 2016

Overall GPA: 3.82/4.00

Dissertation topic: “Joining Dissimilar Structural Alloys by Vaporizing Foil Actuator Welding: Process Conditions, Microstructure, Corrosion, and Strength”

B.S. in Chemical Engineering, University of California Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA Jun. 2010

Overall GPA: 3.49/4.00

Dean’s Honors List, Spring 2007

Sponsored Research Projects

Pratt & Whitney: High-temperature-stable Ti/Fe welded joints Aug. 2012 – Aug. 2013

Advised by Dr. Glenn Daehn, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

Identified Nb and Cu as effective barriers to prevent interdiffusion at Ti/Fe welded junctions

Created Ti/Fe welded joints which remained stable against the formation of intermetallic compounds through a 24-hour heat treatment at 910 C (1670 F)

Optimized welding parameters for the Ti/Nb/Cu/Fe four-layer system

U.S. Department of Energy: Solid-state welding of dissimilar metals Aug. 2013 – Aug. 2016

Advised by Dr. Glenn Daehn, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH

Realized welding of “unweldable” combinations of dissimilar structural alloys, e.g. Al/Fe

Identified 8 strongly impact-weldable dissimilar metal pairs out of 18 candidates tested

Achieved >80% strength retention for 5 Al/Fe weld combinations through a 30-day-long warm salt-spray corrosion test, by means of suitable protective coating

Miniaturized spot welds by 50% while maintaining mechanical performance

Re-designed a key welding consumable and standardized its manufacturing process, resulting in improved performance, repeatability, and economy

Technical Skills and Experiences

Manufacturing Laboratory: Impact welding, photonic Doppler velocimetry, corrosion testing and prevention, conventional and CNC machining, heat treatment; knowledge of both conventional and cutting-edge industrial joining and forming technologies

Mechanical testing: MTS 810 mechanical testing frame, Rockwell and Vickers hardness testers

Microscopy: Metallography, optical microscopy, scanning/transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, fractography, optical profilometry, X-ray diffraction

Software: MATLAB, SolidWorks, PAX-it!, ImageJ, EDAX Genesis, TEAM™ EDS Analysis System

Programming: C++, G code, Excel VBA, VB script, AppleScript

Communication: Full fluency in Mandarin Chinese and English; intermediate fluency in Spanish; effectiveness in both written reports and oral presentations
