12-hour shift:
Scheduled each train to ensure timely arrival and delivery of freight to customers. Each 24 hour period requires a minimum of 26 departing trains at forty-five minute intervals and 20 inbound terminating trains at 60 minute intervals. During my 12-hour shift, I performed all necessary operations for 13 of the 26 trains. My job was performed at the largest train yard in the Southern region holding 10,000 rail cars and 200 employees during each 12-hour shift. Each 24 hour period required time-slot scheduling of all outbound departing trains and inbound terminating trains, of which I was responsible for half of those activities.
Supervised eight Yard Masters.
Constructed train plans that simultaneously ensured the Safety, Service, and Budget per the requirements of the FRA, TSA Homeland Security Haz-mat, and Railroad Union Guidelines.
Constructed each plan to ensure the distribution of correct power/weight proportion per locomotive.
Constructed and distributed plans for 10 inbound trains (2-man crews per train) and 13 outbound trains (2-man crews per train). Each plan was distributed to 8 Yard Masters.
Managed and delegated job activities to my 2 subordinate managers.
Provided customer service for 10 plants to ensure continued freight services at each location. This required switching cars in and out of their sites according to their individual specifications, while simultaneously managing each customer’s product inventory.
Interface regularly with customers to maintain ongoing freight services and ensure that customer needs were continuously being met.
Safety Proficiency testing of 10 employees per 12-hour shift to ensure each employee followed my standard work plan and safety regulations (FRA audit requires a minimum of only 60 per month – UPRR audit requires a minimum of 10 per day).
