Informatica Technical Lead - GDW – Group Data Warehouse

Westpac Bank is the oldest bank in Australia, which started in the year 1817 as Bank of New South Wales. TCS as a vendor provides consulting and support to the bank.

GDW – Group Data warehouse is Westpac’s corporate data warehouse. It functions as a core repository of information used for both operational and MIS functions in areas such as Marketing, Finance and Credit to better understand Westpac’s customer needs, product penetration and credit exposure.

GDW Sources data from approximately 50 source systems, some of which are listed below:

Trading Bank System (TB), Customer Information System (CIS), Trade Finance (TF), Term Deposit System (TD),

Savings Bank System (SB), Online Banking (HBO), Telephone Banking (HB), General Ledger (GL) etc. Data is stored on Oracle Database and loaded at intraday, daily, weekly and monthly intervals.

GDW has interface system called EIG which actually takes data from source system and provides Standard Data Interfaces (SDI – Informatica Mapplet) to GDW. However, there are some sources (older ones) still interfacing directly in the form of files to GDW landing area, or extraction of source data from source using Unix/PL/SQL procedures.

The data from GDW is consumed by various business users for decision making, and also data from GDW is sent to Australian Regulatory Authorities for meeting various compliances.

GDW is the central repository of data for the entire bank. It will also be a source of information to feed to other downstream and data marts. GDW will push the data out of GDW via ETL to a staging or interface area, where other applications can pull information from that staging or interface area.

Data from all the sources are loaded via Connect Direct into AS400 Staging area. Different country data will be kept under different library. Informatica will pull data from AS400 source staging area and load into Oracle database for data transformation process. Finally the data’s are loaded from Oracle GDW to AS400 GDW. End users will be using Showcase to access the information from this GDW. Proper security control mechanism has been set up to make sure only authenticated users can access to authorized information.
