RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
UNDERGRAUDATE BIOTECHNOLOGY LABORATORY (UBL), San Luis Obispo, CA
Research Assistant, March 2014-May 2014
Quantified and analyzed various transects via statistical methods among four desert types (Mohave, Sonoran, Chihuahuan, and Colorado).
Examined whether increased high temperature photosynthetic thermal tolerance (PT), reduced specific leaf area (SLA) and reduced leaf size represent correlated and convergent adaptations for recently diverged Encelia, Salvia, Atriplex and Eriogonumcongeneric species pairs from contrasting thermal and water environments (the Mojave Desert and coastal California).
Studied the ecology of the southwestern deserts including landscape, plants, and wildlife by camping in various locations to examine change across environmental gradients.
UNDERGRAUDATE BIOTECHNOLOGY LABORATORY (UBL), San Luis Obispo, CA
Independent Research, Jan 2015-March 2015
Completion of a research proposal and literature review, including analysis of experimental results from published peer-reviewed articles in biology
Wrote a research proposal for an in vivo experiment testing the amount of ATP synthesis in stress-induced mitochondrial fission cells
Planned projected timeline and budget for experiment
CAL POLY ENVIRONMENTAL PROTEOMICS LAB, San Luis Obispo, CA
Research Assistant, Jan 2015 – Jun 2015
Analyze experimental data and interpret results to write reports and summaries of findings.
Keep detailed logs of all work-related activities.
Observed interspecific and acclimation-induced variation in the temperatures at which heat-shock gene expression is induced
Tested the predictions of the ‘cellular thermometer’ model for the transcriptional regulation of hsp expression
Quantified expression via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis
Identified proteins via mass spectrometry
