Operations Manager/Plant Manager
Effectively managed day to day operations of a concrete pipe, precast structures, and pre-stress structural elements facility. Managed and supervised office and plant staff of 30-40 employees with seven direct reports, reporting directly to the owner/CEO. Acted as General Superintendent and Project Manager for the installation of an automated concrete batch plant and storage silos for a pipe production operation. Project was completed on-time and under budget. Transformed an aged facility to current industry standards by developing and managing a five year facility improvement plan. Implemented and sustained lean, 5S, waste management principles and metrics system in the production facility resulting in reduced waste, increased productivity resulting in a cultural change within the organization. Recommended and executed process improvements and continuous improvement plans resulting in projected savings that exceeded $300K annually.
Reduced the unit cost of concrete mix by introducing Fly Ash into mix design resulting in a savings of 3 to 4 tons of cement daily.(2008) Reduced unit cost of concrete mix by introducing new chemical mixture, reducing cement content and blending aggregates resulting in a savings of 1 to 1.2 tons of cement per day. (2012) Implemented changes resulted in improved performance, quality and aesthetics of end product. Implemented a moisture and temperature control system for a concrete pipe batch mixer resulting in an 11% reduction of waste and a 5% improvement in overall department production efficiency.
Invented and managed several product implementations (handling device, stripping device, and a transportation solutions) within the pipe production business unit. Results of new devices improved overall department efficiency, reduced product breakage, reduced rework by 7% and resulted in FTE reduction. Focused continuing education to acquire, manage and maintain required certifications to qualify production facility as a certified plant and producer for certified specialty products. Effective negotiator and hands-on resolution of customer disputes or issues. Conducts job site visits to promote business relations, investigate quality issues or service complaints resulting in significant back charge reduction. Efficiently and effectively provides coordination of work crews, activities and equipment in the field resulting in reduction job cycle times.
