INTERNSHIP

I completed a one year appointment as a psychology intern at the Gainesville VA Hospital in Gainesville, Florida on August 31, 1994. As part of the internship experience, I was required to serve on four separate rotations, each rotation of three months in duration. The four rotations I completed were as follows:

(1)September-November – Health Psychology. This rotation consisted primarily of consultations throughout the hospital, in which patients were referred by other professionals for a psychological consultation. The problems were varied as having some personal problems to having to deal with a terminal illness. The patient may also request to see a psychologist. During this rotation, I performed two psychological assessments, both of which were for cardiac transplant candidates. In addition, I was the co-facilitator for a support group for the oncology staff. The supervisor for this rotation was Dr. Mary McGuigan.

(2)December-February – Substance Abuse. The major emphasis of this rotation was to provide group therapy to inpatients on a 29 day treatment program. Daily staff meetings were attended by the intern. In addition, screenings were provided by the intern and the staff psychologist in order to assign the patient to one of the groups. Individual therapy was also provided for patients when appropriate. The supervisor for this rotation was Dr. Frank Sieka.

(3)March-May – Inpatient Psychiatry. Attending medical rounds, providing group therapy, and psychological assessments were the major duties on this rotation for the intern. These inpatients were the more severely psychologically impaired patients. The supervisor for this rotation was Dr. Glenn Grace.*

(4)June-August – Neuropsychology. This rotation was one in which persons with head injuries were assessed by the intern and the staff neuropsychologist. Interviews and formal neuropsychological testing were among some of the tools used in this assessment. The supervisor for this rotation was Dr. Abe Spevack.

In addition to the duties of each rotation, each intern was required to carry a caseload of at least five outpatients. I had several clients who suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). I provided therapy for a young woman recovering from anorexia. I provided therapy for a man who had numerous stressors, including homelessness, problems with an ex-wife, and a serious illness. My supervisor for outpatient therapy was Dr. Mary McGuigan.

*As part of this rotation, I worked every Monday at the University of Florida Counseling Center. My intent was to gain more experience with women’s issues, thus broadening my training experience. The female clients I saw had a wide range of problems, including physical abuse, relationship issues, and ACOA (Adult Children of Alcoholics). In addition, for five weeks, I assist Dr. Mary Fukuyama with a stress management group. My supervisor at the Counseling center was Dr. Jamie Funderburk.

I was employed at Columbia Correctional Institution at lake City, Florida for 3 years. It is a maximum security male prison. I supervised eight master’s level clinicians. I also supervised a clerk-typist. I provided therapy, crisis intervention when needed, and assessed suicidal inmates. In my supervisory capacity, I reviewed treatment plans, diagnoses, screenings, and various other documents which were written by the psychological specialists under my supervision. I had various administrative duties, including overseeing their job performance, conducting and attending meetings, compiling reports and working with other departments whenever necessary. In conjunction with personnel, I disciplined my supervisees whenever indicated and ensured that they were complying not only with ethical guidelines of our profession, but with the rules and regulations of the institution in which we worked. I terminated my employment with them on September 18, 1998, partly because the job itself had become unmanageable, but primarily because I wanted to focus on building my private practice.

On April 22, 1994, I successfully defended my doctoral dissertation entitled, “Caregivers of Adults with Closed Head Injury: A Family Systems Approach.”

On June 3, 1997, I was issued Florida License# PY0005626 to practice psychology in the state of Florida.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING

I attended a 3 day workshop from March 18-20, 1998 at the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Fl. It was entitled, “Skill Building in Psychosocial Oncology”.

I attended a 4 day workshop for certification as a bereavement facilitator in Tampa, Florida from July 24, 2000 to July 27, 2000, sponsored by the American Academy of Bereavement.

I completed a two part EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) training in 2002.

PROFESSIONAL PRESENTATIONS

Co-Presenter at the Health Services Workshop for the Department of Corrections in Daytona Beach, Florida on Sept. 16. 1997. The presentation was entitled, “Clinical Issues for Women Providing Treatment in the Department of Corrections Setting”.

On April 19, 1999, I was a guest lecturer for a class in Educational Psychology at the University of Florida. The students were all perspective teachers. I addressed the issues of depression, suicide, eating disorders, and other developmental issues in adolescents.

On October 4, 2000, I presented a talk on “Major Life Transitions: An Opportunity for growth”. This was given at Crown Pointe Senior Citizens facility in Gainesville, Fl.

On October 28, 2005, I was the co-presenter at a workshop at the North Central Florida chapter if the Florida Psychological Association. The topic was Spirituality and Health.
