WORK HISTORY

****-*******: Partner - Educational Media Marketing and Distribution, AJX Consulting. I work with independent filmmakers helping them to market and sell their films to colleges, universities, schools and public libraries. I have had great success creating compelling marketing messages sent to carefully-targeted contact lists, and utilized many other strategic techniques that I teach to, or perform for, our clients.

2008-Present: Owner and Media Producer, Treasure Trove Productions. I create audiovisual content (including audio and video podcasts and photography) for the web, as well as offering a host of services related to audio, video and photography. From initial creative brainstorming through writing, recording, editing, mixing and promotion, I help companies, organizations and individuals enhance their profile and boost their effectiveness by telling their stories on the web. I also document events, record oral histories, and provide voice-over services.

2005–2007: Educational Distribution Manager, Frameline. Coordinated the marketing, promotion and sales of more than 200 documentary, dramatic feature, animation and experimental films within the educational media market (schools, colleges, libraries and community groups). On a challenging nonprofit budget, created outreach materials and web content targeted towards teachers, professors, librarians and community educators and activists. Solicited and facilitated strategic partnerships with other organizations to further mutual goals. Produced an informative monthly e-newsletter with a 98 percent subscription retention rate. Increased educational media sales 88 percent my first year, followed by an additional 33 percent increase the following year.

1996–2006: Regional Writer/Editor, Fodor’s Travel Publications, Inc., a Random House company. Regularly updated their signature travel guides including Fodor’s San Francisco, Fodor’s California, Fodor’s Arizona, Fodor’s USA, Fodor’s UpClose California, California’s Best Bed & Breakfasts and Fodor’s Healthy Escapes. Co-edited Fodor’s California Road Guide. The work included multiple forms of researching, traveling, updating and editing existing written material; evaluating and selecting new lodgings, restaurants and tourist attractions; writing original reviews of these, as well as introductory essays about specific regions.

2004: Interim Education Coordinator, Northern California Grantmakers. Provided event planning, administrative and programmatic support for NCG’s educational activities, including programming and logistical coordination for workshops, panel discussions, special briefings and other educational events for a membership consisting of nonprofit organizations, philanthropic foundations and individuals. Managed the flow of collateral materials to the NCG website and conducted extensive evaluations of educational events via Zoomerang and other polling techniques.

2004-–2016: Co-Director and Media Librarian, Eureka Fellowship Program, Fleishhacker Foundation. Contacted extensive list of Bay Area visual arts administrators, curators and programmers for Fellowship nominations. Identified and selected national panel of visual arts judges. Maintained correspondence with all nominators, nominees, panelists and Fellowship recipients. Coordinated panelists’ travel and accommodations. Co-presided over 2-day panel meeting to select grant recipients. At present as ongoing Media Librarian I administer, prepare and present nominees’ artwork sample materials (digital photography and motion media) to the judging panel each funding cycle. Administer database and create scoring forms for panel and funding staff.

1994–2004: Advertising Director and Business Liaison, Release Print magazine. Sold and administered display ad space for this monthly magazine, a publication of Film Arts Foundation (a nonprofit professional association of independent media makers). Increased annual ad sales tenfold during first two years, fueling the publication’s growth from a small newsletter into a 60-page magazine. Co-developed an online business directory program for advertisers. Performed corporate fundraising in the form of business member recruitment that more than tripled the number of business members. Interfaced with nine departments, including four different magazine editors during my ten years there. Consulted with editorial staff on three major redesigns of the magazine.

1996: Researcher for the book Filmmakers’ Resource: The Watson-Guptill Guide to Workshops, Conferences, Artist’s Colonies and Academic Programs by Julie Mackaman. Identified, contacted, and interviewed faculty and administrators at hundreds of film/video schools and media arts centers nationwide. Processed and distilled press kits and other materials from institutions, worked with author and book producer in shaping emphasis of book as research suggested, and trained author in use of a Filemaker Pro database I developed for the project.

1995: Editorial Consultant Read manuscripts and suggested detailed changes for Geography of the Heart, a memoir by Fenton Johnson, and Walking San Francisco On The Barbary Coast Trail, a historic guidebook by Daniel Bacon.

1994–1995: Advertising Director, PDA Press, Inc. In charge of ad sales for a quarterly journal and a bi-monthly magazine. Also assisted marketing and circulation directors with boosting distribution and circulation, conducting market research (focus groups and phone polling) and inaugurated an in-house retail mail order business.
