FAIRPOINT COMMUNICATIONS - Portland, Maine, January 2008 – October 2010

Labor Relations Manager

Rural telecommunications company that purchased Verizon’s 1.5 million handlines in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Acquisition included 2400 unionized employees (plant, accounting, traffic and call centers – inbound & outbound). Major unions included IBEW & CWA.

Key Achievements:

Negotiated initial CWA agreement for legacy employees that paid less than 50% of the CWA

Northern New England wages. Second chair for IBEW/CWA NNE extension.

Filled over 350 positions internally using a detailed union bid process and back filled the

resulting openings through a combination of internal bids and external hiring.

Decided grievances at step 3 (last step before arbitration) and represented the company as

arbitrator on the tripartite arbitration panel.

Developed labor relations training modules for supervisory staff.

Reduced absenteeism by managing an aggressive absence control program for FMLA usage.
