Aligns and operates drain systems, stripping systems, machinery cooling water systems, oil systems, and purifier systems; aligns steam systems; operates pumps; aligns, operates, and secures internal combustion engines, steam distilling plants, compressed air systems, refrigeration and air conditioning systems; records pressure and temperature readings on operating equipment; conducts tests on lubricating oil and distillate fuels; operates and maintains auxiliary boilers; maintains tools; overhauls valves; performs preventive maintenance on auxiliary equipment, main propulsion equipment, and on small craft clutches, transmissions, drive shafts, and packing glands; tests electrohydraulic steering systems; inspects for leaks in reduction gears and thrust bearings; installs or removes and replaces flange shields on piping systems; fabricates and fits tubing and flexible hose assemblies; monitors electrical charging and regulating systems; operates and maintains hydraulic equipment; controls or minimizes the effects of oil and fuel spills; completes maintenance data system forms; uses blueprints, drawings, and manuals; tests boiler water and feed water. Operates lube oil service, fill and storage systems, and steam reducing stations; performs prestart inspections; tests evaporators and condensers for leaks; conducts feed tests and treatment on distilling plants; aligns pump driving units; overhauls air compressors, internal combustion engines, pumps, refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, small craft clutches, transmissions and drive shafts; repairs valves and packing glands; tests and recharges refrigeration and air conditioning systems; tests and repairs piping systems; tests, cleans, inspects, and repairs or replaces heat exchangers; troubleshoots and repairs auxiliary equipment, internal combustion engines, and distilling plants; uses halide torch to test for leaks on refrigeration and air conditioning equipment; adjusts valves, injectors, control racks, governor, and governor control linkages on diesel engines; checks oil clearance in bearings; disassembles, cleans, repairs, assembles, tests, and replaces fuel nozzles; inspects and repairs lube oil and fuel oil purifiers; inspects metal surfaces for cracks or defects by the dye penetrant and magnaflux methods; inspects, adjusts and test-runs diesel and gasoline engines; lubricates steering gear; operates and maintains vertical conveyors; operates and troubleshoots internal combustion engine blowers and turbochargers; operates an engine lathe; adjusts and repairs refrigeration automatic controls. Analyzes malfunctions of main propulsion equipment and takes corrective action; repairs and maintains mechanical and hydraulic governors, over speed trips, and load limiting governors; checks main engine bearing readings; inspects and checks clearances on blowers and turbochargers; measures main propulsion shaft thrust clearance; conducts quality assurance inspections; supervises maintenance activities; prepares planned maintenance schedules.
