Walgreens needed a tablet-optimized application to assist with a new position in their stores, so they put on a public competition. I was runner-up among ~25 other companies/teams.
I geocoded every physician in the U.S. and every clinical trial worldwide then cached them into tens of millions of JSON structures corresponding to map tiles. Generating tiles at level 20 for the entire world would be impractical. Instead, the pre-caching method I developed started at the highest level (4 tiles) and cascaded down to lower tiles until it reached 30 physicians or less. So it would naturally drill down further into the populous areas, while minimizing rural areas. Many other optimizations were made to perfect the UX. Most of my time was focused on honing the UI down to the simplest, most consistent design possible.
Weebin.com
A book rental site with a competitive edge: it mined the course material records of about 2 million sections from ~270 U.S. universities. I used this data in conjunction with the Maxmind database to create a breakthrough in marketing and user experience, driving ~700 unique visitors/day at a CPC of <$0.001 (Avg CPC in 2010 was $1.24). The main challenge was developing a system which could reconcile together the various data sources (e.g., gov. course info, class schedules, materials, book covers) with differing structures while maintaining data integrity and avoiding duplicates. A lot of work was done to eliminate the friction of getting people to use it (e.g., sign up comes afterwards). Many unseen personalizations and optimizations are made using the user's geolocation.
