Personal Statement

A former Royal Naval Submarine Officer, and a highly experienced Electro Mechanical MEP Operations Executive, who has been in constant contract employment for the past 9 years, and self-employment for 22 years before that. Having coordinated projects of all sizes in many locations encompassing Europe, the Middle East, the Americas and the Caribbean, successfully delivering them to requirements on-time and in-budget. The scope of the projects I have overseen includes but has not been limited to: Luxury Hotels, Data Centres, Infrastructure, Shopping Malls, Airports, Hospitals, Design and Build Projects, HVAC, District cooling, Chiller plants and High Voltage Switch-gear installations.

I am a positive, outgoing, mature and very flexible individual with good communication skills at all levels. As someone with an extensive background in Electrical and Security System Installations, Maintenance, and Construction on a whole, I have the ability to ‘hit the ground running’.

My objective is to secure a suitable permanent Senior MEP Management Position, which would allow me to be able to share my experience, expertise and knowledge, and to coach and mentor the next generation of top Site Management and Engineers.

Currently located in the UK due to my contract in Qatar coming to a close, I am now seeking my next new appointment. I am ready to mobilize immediately and take the lead on my next new challenge.

MEP Manager/MEP Construction Manager

As MEP Manager I lead the effort in coordinating and managing the MEP trades on this major construction project. Working with the Construction, Project, Sub-Contract and Main Contract teams to ensure successful completion of all MEP trade work.

Responsibilities:

Estimate and scope MEP trades during pre-construction

Review Contract Documents, making suggestions/modifications as they relate to the MEP trades

Manage and lead MEP subcontractors throughout duration of the project (from Ground-breaking through Commissioning and Turnover to Owner)

Assist Scheduling department with developing detailed CPM schedules for all MEP installation activities, including cost and resource loading

Work with Site Superintendents on project logistics and temporary facility plans

Monitor the installation and start-up of MEP systems and commissioning of project with Engineer & Owner

Coordinate activities, materials procurement and other related activities with Field Staff

Communicate progress and prepare appropriate reports as needed

Represent The Company in regard to the MEP process at weekly Owners and

Construction Delivery Integration Manager MEP (Muscat & Salalah International Airports)

My primary purpose as Construction Delivery Integrator was to Head the MEP Division, develop logistical plans to ensure alignment of the portfolio logistics teams, handling project-specific logistics. To this end, my responsibilities included:

Head the MEP Division

Control of Budgets.

Assist in the delivery and integration of the production stage design, manufacture and assembly to meet performance targets.

Implement project-specific strategies for safety, risk, quality, and environmental impact.

Selection and control of sub-contractors

Site managing all MEP staff and sub-contractors

Support the Co-ordination Manager in ensuring project priorities are established and communicated.

Maximise production output through efficient site organisation.

Carrying out Site Safety Tours, ensuring all staff adheres to H & S legislation and project directives.

Co-ordination with the portfolio, construction and commissioning teams, as well as suppliers, to manage information requirements (both inputs and outputs) and to ensure safe production.

Liaison with externally appointed site-safety representatives on a regular basis.

Identifying and reporting engineering issues, including change and deviations from the GCR.

Ensuring full co-operation and co-ordination between all subordinates, suppliers and parties on site.

Review method statements and risk assessments for compliance.

Ensure that identified risks have been adequately addressed.

Review and comment on inspection and test plans and proposals for corrective work, addressing and resolving non-conformances.

Ensuring that the Portfolio Team are informed of logistical/temporary works so as to plan accordingly.

Sept 2009 – Dec 2010: Bauer Electrical Middle East MEP LLC

Operations Manager MEP (Victim of Credit Crunch 2)

The MEP and manufacturing group employ 850 people with an annual turnover in excess of AED 500M. In this role I took full responsibility for the execution of all projects and the co-ordination of departmental central services to achieve same. Acting as No. 1 to the Managing Director, I selected, interviewed and assigned new members of skilled staff, including the arrangement of recruiting drives. I also took responsibility for managing profit and loss.

All Project Managers, Engineering and Drafting Departments would report through me as we strived to improve our day-to-day management focus and communications. I oversaw the installation and commissioning of HV/LV switch gear installations, including ABB and Schneider equipment, as well as HVAC installations and plumbing. I also over- saw all MEP project Installations Managers and provided support for POD and Precast Concrete Engineering.

Senior Contracts Manager (Victim of Credit Crunch 1)

I was working as No 1 to the MEP General Manager, ensuring the smooth running of all MEP sites, from start-up to completion. I also introduce and ran the FM department to the company. The values of the contracts ranged from 500,000AED to 500,000,000AED. My duties included:

Attending meeting with clients and main contractors on behalf of the Company.

Chairing regular site, progress and planning meetings.

Selection and recruitment of staff from Project Managers down to Labour to ensure sufficient staffing resource for each project requirement.

Taking responsibility for all Office and Senior Staff welfare.

Coordinating with the design and drawing departments.

Ensuring that all agreed engineering standard practices were implemented.

Coordinating with the Commercial Manager and Project managers ensuring targets were met.

Electrical Engineering Project Manager (On 12 + 2 Month Contracts)

I was responsible for the on-time and on-budget delivery of a £2M MEP design and build project, constructing a Data Centre for the Government on an initial 12 month contract, in Andover. Reporting directly to the Clients MD (Atos Origin Ltd) and to the MD of EME Ltd. As well as attending all progress meetings and authoring status reports, I was tasked with arranging all staff, labour and subcontractors for supply and installation of the following materials:

3 X UPS

1 x Battery Backup Room

Installation of a Computer Clean Room, including, airflow, small power and lighting, and fibre optic cables.

All MEP (M&E) & HVLV installation throughout the complex.

Nov 2006 –March 2007: BSG, Cayman/Bermuda

Consultant Project Manager (On 3 + 1 Month Contract)

Working for the Caribbean’s largest Security Company, based on Cayman. I was employed on a 3-month contract to perform purchase review, for all of the companies’ outlets throughout the Caribbean (Cayman, Bermuda, Miami and Bahamas), as well as establishing satellite distribution organization in Miami, to minimize materials costs and distribution.

Contract Electrical Project Engineer / Manager (On 18 Month Contract)

Projects included:

Project managing a luxurious new Design & Build Residential M&E Project in Wakefield (£1.3mil Project).

Construction of a Multi-Story Car Park for Leeds St James Hospital (£2.4mil Project).

Consultant on a Luxury Hotel New Build in Stoke.

Contract Electrical Project Manger (On 3 Month Contract)

Answering directly to the Project Director, I was working on the Manchester joint Hospital Project, with a total budget of £27M for the project. I was responsible for the Energy Centre, at £9.2mil of the project allocation.

Arranging power supplies for the whole Hospital project.

Managing a small staff of engineers, QS, CAD, site supervisors, and around 200 subcontractors.

Ensuring my own staff and all subcontractors adhered to Health and Safety rules.

Overseeing the on-time and in-budget delivery of my section.

1983 – Jan 2005: Clarke Electrical Contractors

Managing Director / Owner

Clarke Electrical was established in 1981, when I left the Royal Naval after nine years of successful service. I developed the company slowly, while retaining a full-time position as an Electronic Engineer and Area Manager, but by early 1983, Clarke Electrical and its services were in such demand that I focused on it full-time and employed a team of dedicated and highly-skilled staff of 6 MEP engineers and 16 electricians.

As well as being one of the major Electrical Contractors in the Rotherham and Sheffield areas, and a leading competitor in the South Yorkshire area itself, we also took on projects as Main Contractor, and have completed projects ranging from £50,000 up to £3.5M. I personally reviewed every job, conducted initial site visits, and supervised all commissioning.

Security installations in all types of property, to BS4737 and Nacoss Standards.

Car showrooms, mechanical and body shops, including spray booths, ovens, dust and exhaust extraction.
