Work Experience
Rutgers Collaborative Research Mentoring Program
Mentor Intern at Livingston Elementary School
New Brunswick, NJ January 2016 - May 2016
I had the honor of working as a mentor for the New Brunswick Livingston Elementary School 5th graders. These students lived in an impoverished, underprivileged community in New Brunswick, lacking many resources necessary for academic and career success.
Working in the Rutgers Collaborative Research Program as a mentor, I provided these students with encouragement, academic advice to help them through schoolwork, tutoring in subjects they needed assistance in, and guidance on any issues they were having in school or at home.
Many of these students had behavioral disorders, such as ADD/ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder, and autism. By utilizing the ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis) principles of psychology and by applying the lessons learned from my Intro to Mentoring class for this internship, I was able to successfully help these students achieve good grades in their classes as well as develop a trusting relationship with them where they felt comfortable confiding in me about their personal issues.
