Project Description:

Kapoor and Associates is an immigration attorney firm based in Atlanta. Kapoorlaw.com site gives information about visa and green card status to its clients. Whenever any visa or green card related paperwork is filed with Kapoor and Associates, the administrator adds client name in the system, which can be accessed over the net. The web site generates ID and password for the user. Whenever documents are processed or input comes from INS, site administrator updates the status of the respective client. ID and password can be used to access status information by clients.

Kapoorlaw.com also provides lot of information about immigration such as FAQ about visas, latest updates from INS and information about Kapoor and Associates. FAQ and immigration updates are updated on a regular basic.

Responsibilities:

Ported existing application from an existing technology platform comprising Java Swing, J2EE JDK 1.3, Resin Application Server 3.2, Java Servlets, JavaBeans, SQL Server 2000 on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server network to a freeware based technology platform as well as upgraded Java version.

The new environment consisted of upgrading the programming using Java 1.4 SDK as well as enhancements to the system.

Development environment was comprised of RedHat Linux 5.5 as the operating environment, Jakarta Tomcat 3.3.1 as Application Server, EJBs Enterprise Java Beans in the mid-tier for handling business logic and a MySQL database on the backend.

Installed and configured the tomcat 3.3.1 in Linux 8.0.

Installed the MySql database in Linux 8.0

Installed and configured the j2sdk1.4 in Linux 8.0.

Changed the JDBC driver from SQL Server to Mysql in the java class.

Deployed the jsp, servelt and java class files in tomcat running on Linux 8.0.

Configured the web.xml to identify the kapoor application.

Identified the stored procedures in SQL Server 2000.

For each stored procedure a java function is developed.

Identify the java class files which are calling the stored procedures.

Changed the java source code so that java class files will not call the stored procedure but call the java equivalent function.

Compile the classes.

Evaluated various web enabling technology platforms s.a. Microsoft .NET Framework; J2EE, Oracle; and Microsoft’s existing VB 6.0, ASP, COM, ADO, IIS, SQL Server based solutions for charting a migration path from client server applications written using PowerBuilder 6.5.

Recommended and implemented migration plan for PowerBuilder 6.5 to Microsoft web technologies using VB 6.0, ASP, COM, ADO, IIS, Oracle 8i since Visual Studio.Net was still in the beta release stage during evaluation.

Another reason to not implement .NET Framework based development was because the platform being used was Windows NT 4.0 with Service pack 6 and the scalability as well as performance were unknown factors.

Wrote design specifications document for migrating from PowerBuilder 6.5 application to Microsoft web technology stack of VB 6.0, ASP, COM, ADO, IIS and Oracle 8i.

Designed the original client server database application on Oracle 8i RDBMS using ERWin and Power Designer tools.

Developed COM components using Visual Basic 6.0 for translating the business logic from PowerBuilder 6.5 applications.

ActiveX Data Object (ADO) OLE DB was used to establish connectivity with the Oracle 8i database through ODBC.

Optimized the Oracle 8i RDBMS data model by using ERWin. Note: Converted a schema with entities containing large number of composite primary keys (some as large as 8) to a better schema through the use of surrogate primary keys (1-2).
