Refinery Operations Console Board Operator controlling a Honeywell DCS console board system. Responsible for controlling the refinery's steam header, fire water system, Benzene Recovery Unit and water treatment facilities.
As the SME (subject matter expert) for the Utilities Department I was responsible for writing and creating training documents and materials. These documents and materials included, but were not limited to, area specific diagrams, site maps, control schemes, and safe work procedures for each unit. I utilized P & IDs as well as walked and/or climbed within the refinery units, tracing pipelines and outlining equipment to ensure the accuracy of the training materials.
As a member of the Training and Development team I was given the opportunity to be part of a distinct group that implemented an entirely new and updated training format. The new format was created in efforts to keep our training procedures evergreen. We successfully created a training system utilizing CBT’s (computer based training), a uniformed format and a shared library system of safety procedures, training manuals, environmental regulations, emergency procedures, new hire on-boarding procedures, BOT (basic operator training) procedures as well as system of “What if” scenario guides to refer to during safety meeting tool-box topics.
The development of the new training format spanned across many years, but ultimately provided a thorough and cohesive training system that affords the capability of staying updated and evergreen. This method of training is now adopted company-wide by all of the refineries.
