So, I was in the studio everyday learning about the process of recording/mixing/microphones/signal flow/consoles, etc. and, I was learning it first hand. Of course we had supplementary course reading, but it was trial by fire for the most part. I learned so much there...

• Learned how to solder and make my own audio cables.

• Learned how to fix particular frequency hums from a plate reverb.

• Microphone placement (which is critical to know) based on polar pattern.

• Learned about A/D - D/A conversion and master clocks/SMPTE time code.

• Learned how to record to 2" analog tape.

• Compression, EQ, gain structure, summing, headroom, quantization, phase, patch bays, and a ton of other stuff.

• That job gave me the knowledge to be able to walk into any studio and know exactly what everything is, and how to go about my way.
