August 2001 – June 2011 Middle School Art Teacher MSAD #1
Develop curriculum for Art in grades 6 – 8
Determine supplies needed for projects and appropriate amounts
Develop Grading rubric for each project so that students could see how their work was scored.
Also developed “Step” system for each student to keep with their project. Each project would have a completed example for them to see, and then a thorough demonstration in class on how to do certain steps. Their step paper was like a set of instructions so that when they finished one step, they could look at their paper and know what to do next. I would circulate in the classroom to assist and encourage as needed.
The lessons I gave them were never grade appropriate, they were always above where they were academically. Some were high school level, others were college level. I pushed my students to give me their best as I knew the could and they never disappointed me.
There was a yearly art show at the local mall and I always had students who wanted all their work included. Many have come to me later as well as their parents to tell me they still have the things their kids did in my class and many have had them framed.
Make my classroom a safe place for my students, relaxed, and within limits, to work at your own pace. I wanted them to have fun while with me, which they did, but the most fun part of all was that they were learning at the same time.
