Key Career Accomplishments

Led and reshaped human resource departments at The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, Bradlees, Inc. and Fairmont Tamper to be leaner, more customer focused and better aligned with the goals of the operation of these businesses. Increased value to employees without increasing Company costs by health plan redesign, establishing a company store/catalogue operation; in-house medical services (health screenings, Driver Department of Transportation exams, respiratory, hearing and blood pressure testing/monitoring), CPR training; employee discounts with local merchants; improved cafeteria services; refocused service awards and incentive programs. Effectively recruited senior executives, professionals, exempt and nonexempt staff across several industries, job codes and locations.

Led corporate labor relations departments, having negotiated as chief spokesperson more than 400 Collective Bargaining Agreements at multi-site and multi-state locations, covering skilled trades, retail, manufacturing, health care and organized professional workers across the United States: achieving productivity improvements, modest economic settlements, Health Plan redesign, Union Pension Plan redesign/withdrawal and innovative compensation programs within retail (skill based pay), distribution/transportation, newspaper and manufacturing environments.

Designed and implemented Corporate Union Prevention Programs, which have integrated the use of management training, communications, monitoring and in-house and outside counsel to maintain positive employee environments. No successful organization efforts were achieved by any union at any company/location where I have worked once this program was implemented.

Directed employee related legal matters, drafted documents and supervised outside legal counsel at each of the above mentioned companies and litigated where needed, reducing labor and employment legal expense for arbitrations, NLRB (Unfair Labor Practices, Decertifications and Representation Petitions), EEO, FMLA and OSHA matters up to 90%. Have provided legal and due diligence counsel to senior management regarding 2 acquisitions, 1 divestiture and 7division realignments/consolidations/closing agreements, advised/drafted settlement/separation agreements and provided counsel on some immigration matters.

Streamlined operations within retail, distribution, newspaper and manufacturing operations listed above through collective bargaining, staff reductions, severance/buyout programs, process re-engineering, the implementation of performance standards, accident review boards and relate training.

Produced in-house newspapers, newsletters and video for more effective communications with employees at The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, Bradlees and Fairmont Tamper. Designed curriculum as part of a cooperative effort between the University of Maryland and the Baltimore Sun as a member of the University’s Advisory Board.

Trustee on $1 Billion Dollar Taft-Hartley Pension Fund.

Designed training programs and provided instruction for management and line supervision regarding labor relations, union prevention, safety (OSHA, Right- to- Know, Accident Prevention) and employee conflict resolution strategies.
