Collected water samples from Chehalem Ridge Natural Area to measure microbial diversity

The Tualatin River provides drinking water for hundreds of thousands of people in Washington County and all of the water that falls onto Chehalem Ridge eventually leads to the Tualatin. Chehalem Ridge has been undergoing a restoration logging project that may negatively impact the health of the water draining into the Tualatin River. The aim of this work was to assess the microbial metabolic diversity of various streams that experience exposure to various levels of human interference.

Community Level Physiological Profiling was used to apply carbon source utilization patterns to gather information regarding the function of mixed microbial communities.

Used Biolog Ecoplates and automated plate reader in order to measure optical densities of each well and infer microbial diversity

Conducted extensive statistical tests, along with measures of diversity calculations including Richness, total carbon metabolism, Average Well Color Development, diversity of carbon metabolism and Shannon Weaver Index, a combination of those two factors.

Presented research at Pacific University Undergraduate Research Conference and Murdock Undergraduate Research Conference
